WGL - Environmental Technician I at Washington Gas. The Environmental Technician I works under the general supervision of the Environmental Supervisor for the Remediation Program and assists the Hazardous Waste Coordinator, environmental staff and other technical personnel. This intermediate-level role supports environmental field operations, coordinates with contractors and procurement staff, and helps ensure readiness of response equipment. The role involves foundational fieldwork and assisting with more advanced operations under supervision. Responsibilities
Manufactured Gas Plants (MGP) Program: assist with inspections and routine maintenance of East Station groundwater treatment system components; collect samples, take measurements, and maintain records under supervision Perform basic operational and maintenance tasks on treatment plant components (e.g., oil-water separator, carbon/clay units); change bag filters Identify and document parts and supplies for the groundwater treatment system; coordinate orders and track deliveries with procurement Operate pumps and tubing to support coal tar recovery and coordinate removal or draining of tar collection tanks with specialized contractors Clean and maintain field equipment (pumps, generators, compressors, sampling tools, meters) Collect samples following established procedures and complete chain-of-custody forms with oversight Report operational issues and assist with troubleshooting under guidance Coordinate with specialized contractors to ensure work is performed safely and per procedures; report progress and issues Maintain field logs/records and monitoring data Hazardous Waste Program: support hazardous waste handling and documentation per DOT and RCRA guidelines; certifications preferred Assist with weekly inspections of hazardous waste accumulation points; complete inspection checklists and report observations Prepare basic hazardous waste labels; ensure drums are closed and staged for pickup Maintain drum tracking system and assist with waste handling equipment delivery Handle waste materials under supervision; not signing manifests unless DOT/RCRA certified; certifications preferred Collect condensate samples and maintain chain-of-custody forms Maintain OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER Participate in training to maintain CDL eligibility; Hazmat endorsement preferred or in progress Identify confined spaces and, if certified, perform tasks within them under supervision and safety protocols Use respirator as required with fit testing and training Emergency Response Program: support inventory management of response supplies and perform routine checks on equipment (e.g., mercury vacuums, PIDs) with supervision General Activities: communicate effectively with team and contractors, manage calendars for inspections and sampling, use Microsoft Office for data entry and reporting, organize files, maintain spill kits, PPE, and emergency supplies, participate in meetings and toolbox talks, maintain personal certifications (e.g., HAZWOPER, Driver’s License, CDL) You Have / Qualifications: 2–3 years of environmental fieldwork or related technical experience High school diploma or GED (environmental coursework preferred) Basic mechanical aptitude and familiarity with pumps, generators, compressors, meters, and related tools Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy; ability to work independently and follow SOPs Must complete respirator qualifications and maintain 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification Valid driver’s license; CDL (preferred or in progress); HazMat endorsement (preferred or in progress) DOT and RCRA certification (preferred or in progress); Class 1 Operator Certification from Maryland or equivalent (preferred or ability to obtain); Forklift, Confined Space Entry (preferred or ability to obtain) Meet Company driving standards We offer a competitive pay starting at $36.32 per hour, commensurate with experience, education, and skills.
