Sanitation Technician role at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Responsible for the sanitation and sterilization of animal caging systems to maintain a high-level rodent colony health program. Responsibilities
Operate mechanical cage wash equipment, including automation, tunnel, rack, high pressure autoclaves, dry heat sterilizers, and automatic bedding dispensing units (SureFlo and SureVac). Remove, receive, and prepare soiled rodent cages and water bottles for washing. Handle, store, and prepare clean materials processed through cage wash equipment. Fill sanitized water bottles with reverse osmosis (RO) water as needed. Prepare clean cage setups for animal care staff; operate, clean, and maintain the SureVac system as needed. Maintain chemical mixing stations, including filling and preparation of chemicals; provide animal care staff with clean forceps and containers for properly mixed chemicals daily. Handle, dump, remove, and package chemical or biohazard treated bedding and debris at ABSL1, ABSL2, and chemical hazard levels; weekly removal of carcasses and packaging. Maintain clean and orderly cage wash areas (clean and dirty sides); perform routine sanitation of walls, ceilings, floors, cage wash equipment (stainless steel polish), and storage racks in cage wash and sterile holding areas; remove recycling, soiled material, and trash daily. Monitor environmental changes in cage wash areas and report deviations to appropriate supervisors; report mechanical problems promptly when equipment is not working properly. Complete daily floor decontamination, including use of an electronic floor machine scrubber. Minimum Education
High School Diploma or GED preferred. Minimum Experience
None required. One year of experience working in an accredited/non-accredited laboratory animal facility and/or veterinarian technician program preferred. English reading, writing, and computer skills required. License/Certification/Registration
AALAS technician certification at the ALAT level is preferred but not required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to work independently and within a team. Ability to follow SOPs and perform duties accordingly. English verbal and written communication; cleaning and use of phone/PDA. Strong cleaning skills and ability to follow directions. Organized, detail-oriented, able to learn new tasks and communicate effectively with management.
