Experienced Underwriter - Workers Compensation
BHHC is seeking an experienced Underwriter for the San Diego, CA office. This role evaluates new and renewal business in accordance with established guidelines to achieve profitability and growth, while developing productive agency relationships. The underwriter demonstrates knowledge of statutory regulations, industry best practices, and appropriate application of deductible programs and loss sensitive plans. This is a hybrid opportunity with an onsite training period followed by a minimum of three days per work week in the San Diego, CA office.
Responsibilities
Appropriately discerns applications for coverage, ensuring information is accurate and complete for pricing. Collaborates with the Underwriting Support Specialist team and agency partners to obtain any additional required information.
Analyzes current and prospective policyholders to determine appropriate quotation, indication, or declination of coverage. Communicates pricing within an authority level to brokers and producers per industry and corporate standards using proprietary software and databases.
Analyzes production and actuarial reports; coordinates with Loss Control and Claims to address accounts performing adversely.
Negotiates premium costs and net rates to ensure profitability and achievement of new business goals.
Makes timely and sound decisions on submission issues, binds agreed-upon policies with Underwriting Support Specialists, ensures timely policy production, and prepares Loss Control requests for appropriate accounts.
Proactively communicates with external clientele and internal resource partners to foster agency relationships and client retention. Ensures deadlines are met and inquiries are answered promptly. Supports agency visits and participates in policyholder and broker sales calls as needed.
Performs special assignments and projects as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university (preferably in Risk Management, Economics, Finance, or Business).
Certifications: Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation is a plus.
Experience: Minimum of three years of underwriting experience at a workers’ compensation carrier.
Language Ability: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret business materials; write detailed reports and correspondence; and present information to management and public groups.
Math Ability: Ability to work with mathematical concepts and apply them to practical situations.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, and draw valid conclusions under defined conditions.
Technical Skills: Knowledge of workers’ compensation underwriting regulations and applicable strategic principles.
Computer Skills: Proficient with Microsoft Office and able to rapidly learn proprietary and vendor software.

Salary range: $70,304 - $105,270 per year. In accordance with the California Equal Pay Act, this range is an estimate of the salary the employer reasonably expects to pay and may vary by qualifications and location. The actual salary may be above or below the range.
