Overview
Under the supervision of the Campus Director or Campus Supervisor and in accordance with Head Start (HS) Federal Program Performance Standards, California Department of Education (CDE), California Department of Social Services (CDSS), Childcare Licensing Division (CLD), and Mission Neighborhood Center’s (MNC), the Lead Preschool Teacher is responsible for providing children 3-5 years with a positive learning environment. The lead teacher addresses all areas of development and meets the individual needs of each child. In partnership with parents, the lead teacher observes and assesses children’s development, plans children’s curriculum based on child development knowledge, designs the learning environment, and implements and supervises developmentally appropriate learning activities. Essential Functions / Responsibilities
Interacting with Children:
Instruct children and parents (e.g., nutrition, self-care, social, motor skills, language skills, etc.) for the purpose of optimizing development of each child and helping to enhance parenting skills. Uses English language to assist ESL learners and to expand language skills of English-Speakers.
Implements academic, behavior, family events, health and nutrition plans (e.g., literacy activities, stories, songs, math/science activities, art) to achieve program objectives.
Role-models and ensures center team support for specialized services for children with identified special needs in the classroom.
Assists children with hand washing and tooth brushing to model personal hygiene; assists children during naptime.
Assists with small-group activities to provide routines that support individual/group needs and comply with guidelines.
Uses positive discipline techniques such as CSEFEL in guiding children’s behavior.
Assessing Children:
Observe children in all developmental domains and document observations showing progress through weekly lesson plans and anecdotal notes within identified timelines. Monitor conversation, manners, cleanup activities, and listening for appropriate social behavior.
Demonstrates awareness of entire group, including number ratio while working with primary care children.
Curriculum Preparation:
Use a curriculum framework that provides opportunities for each child to meet learning expectations and prepares children for school success. Organize indoor/outdoor environments with age-appropriate experiences. Provide quiet/active and field trip activities. Conduct home visits in accordance with Head Start Performance Standards. Develop Individualized Learning Plans (ILP) for each child based on observations, screenings, parent input, and DRDP-2015 results. Collaborate with Campus Director / Campus Supervisor to prepare developmentally appropriate lesson plans and support referrals for suspected special needs.
Communication with Parents:
Act as a resource for families, inform parents about daily routines, policies, field trips, and volunteer opportunities. Communicate incidents observed on-site. Encourage parent involvement in Head Start, obtain required signatures, and conduct ILP conferences with parents at least twice per year.
Supervision:
Assist volunteers and parents in working with children, ensure adherence to schedules and safety procedures, and work with teachers to ensure well-being and safety of all children. Understand emergency/safety procedures.
Administration:
May cover in the absence of Campus Director / Campus Supervisor. Maintain and file necessary forms and documents. Ensure required health screenings and developmental assessments, and coordinate timelines for enrollment activities and reports.
Classroom Maintenance:
Maintain classroom equipment and records, perform routine safety checks, assist with meal setup and verification, and handle emergency situations as needed.
Secondary Functions:
Follow Head Start/CDE/CLD policies in reporting suspected child abuse; attend meetings and trainings; adhere to timekeeping and payroll procedures.
Safety & Environment:
Maintain safety, use PPE as required, report safety issues promptly, and ensure safe movement of children in the environment.
Qualifications:
Education: An Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Development (ECD) or related field is required, and must be enrolled in a Bachelor’s Degree program in ECD or related field; a Bachelor’s Degree is highly preferred. Experience: at least 2 years working with preschoolers.
Requirements:
California CDE Teacher Permit, FBI/DOJ fingerprint clearance, CACI, health screenings, immunizations, CPR/First Aid, Registry, and funder trainings (may include evenings or Saturdays).
Language:
Bilingual/bi-literate preferred (English/Spanish or other as program needs).
Skills & Abilities:
Strong customer service, communication, organization, confidentiality, and ability to work in a multicultural team. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and basic office equipment. Ability to multitask and manage time effectively.
Physical Demands:
Sit ~40%, stand/walk ~60% combined; ability to lift up to 30 pounds; frequent use of hands; vision requirements as described in the original posting.
