The Platforms Infrastructure Engineering team designs and builds the hardware and software technologies that power Google's services. As a Thermal Systems Senior Manager, you will lead teams to design and evaluate IT and data center thermal systems, identify product requirements, and contribute to research and project planning. You are responsible for leading teams (with people management responsibility) to design and optimize an architecture that will scale with Google's growth, and for developing product and process improvements, providing consultation, and helping with training and career development. The ML, Systems, & Cloud AI (MSCA) organization designs, implements, and manages the hardware, software, machine learning, and systems infrastructure for Google services and Google Cloud. Our users include Googlers, Cloud customers, and billions of people who use Google services worldwide. We prioritize security, efficiency, and reliability across our work, from developing TPUs to running a global network, while advancing hyperscale computing. Our impact spans software and hardware, including Google Cloud’s Vertex AI and Gemini models for enterprise customers. The US base salary range for this full-time position is $221,000–$311,000 plus bonus, equity, and benefits. Pay is determined by role, level, location, and other factors. Lead a team (with people management responsibilities) to resource and enable qualification of thermal solutions from concept design to final production and deployment; collaborate with cross-functional leaders and external vendors/partners to maintain and improve design, development, and qualification processes. Support career development and growth of individual team members; participate in hiring and talent decisions. Act as a technical leader with in-depth thermal knowledge of servers, storage, networking, ML systems, and other IT equipment systems. Contribute to the overall system architecture from “chip-to-chiller” to optimize performance and total cost of ownership of the IT infrastructure; develop holistic thermal designs and architectures from package to data center. Develop specifications and test procedures to ensure reliability and performance of electronic equipment; collaborate, supervise, mentor, and motivate internal and external teams to design and develop excellent products. Qualifications
Minimum qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, or related field, or equivalent practical experience. 12 years of experience in electronics packaging/server systems/data center or related industry. 12 years of experience with thermal analysis modeling and characterization. 5 years of experience with leading technical teams with product development. Preferred qualifications: Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, or related field, or equivalent practical experience. Experience providing technical leadership by establishing project goals, coordinating resources, and solving system issues through technical innovation. Experience in advanced cooling techniques such as liquid cooling, thermal interface materials, thermoelectric devices, two-phase heat transfer, or heat exchangers. Experience capturing temperature, pressure, velocity, power, flow rates, acceleration, displacement, sound; experience with FloTHERM, IcePak, and CAD. Experience leading collaborations with OEMs, ODMs, and cooling systems and component suppliers to deliver thermal products at scale.
