Overview
The City Traffic Engineer leads Traffic and Transportation services with diverse funding sources and manages a large and complex program. This position reports to the City Engineer and supervises a team of 9 full-time employees plus consultants. Open until filled; early submissions are encouraged. Responsibilities
Direct operations of Traffic and Transportation services and formulate departmental administrative and operational policies and procedures. Manage the Transportation and Mobility section budget, provide day-to-day leadership, and maintain a high performance, customer-service oriented work environment. Manage contracts with consultants for traffic engineering services; coordinate traffic services with other City departments; perform grant development and research programs for potential funding of traffic-safety related projects. Serve as inter-agency liaison, representing the City on regional transportation issues; provide staff support to committees, commissions, and citizen groups related to transportation and traffic matters. Oversee planning, coordination, maintenance, and repairs for 164 city-maintained signals; supervise in-house and contract staff and operations of the Traffic Management Center. Assess traffic conditions and implement measures to improve traffic flow on corridors and at intersections; review and approve citywide signage and striping work orders. Oversee development review for traffic-related items, including CEQA documents, technical reports, and improvement plans. Direct oversight of transportation and traffic related Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) projects with diverse funding sources; support bicycle and pedestrian networks per master plans. Manage traffic calming programs and citizen requests (e.g., speed hump program) and school-zone safety initiatives; respond to inquiries and issues via public channels (e.g., 311). Minimum Qualifications
The following are the minimum qualifications for entry into the classification: Education : Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a directly related field Experience : Five (5) years of professional engineering and/or construction/project management experience and two (2) years of supervisory experience Licensing/Certifications : California Professional Engineering (Civil) Registration or registration as a California Traffic Engineer required upon hire or within the first twelve months of employment; valid California Class C Driver’s License with satisfactory driving record.
