Your Role:

As a Software Engineer on our team, you'll play a critical role in building and evolving a multi-service ETL pipeline that serves as the foundation of our vulnerability intelligence. You'll use your intellectual curiosity and engineering expertise to tackle challenging data problems, from wrangling diverse and unstructured data sources to designing and implementing robust systems that can handle whatever the Internet throws our way.

This role isn't just about writing code; it's about making a direct impact on our customers' ability to understand and reduce their cyber risk. You'll work on a system that is constantly adapting to new threats and data sources, requiring creative solutions and a commitment to delivering high-quality, impactful software.

We believe great engineers come from a variety of backgrounds. If you have a passion for solving complex problems and a solid foundation in software development, we encourage you to apply.

Design and build scalable components of our ETL pipeline, including new data ingestion processes and complex transformation logic

Contribute to a microservices architecture by writing clean, efficient, and well-tested Python code

Collaborate across teams to define technical specifications, understand requirements, and ensure seamless integration of new data sources

Debug and troubleshoot distributed systems, identifying root causes of data anomalies, performance bottlenecks, or service disruptions

Enhance and optimize our data flow using a variety of AWS services (e.g., S3, Lambda, SQS) to ensure pipeline integrity, efficiency, and scalability

Participate in code reviews and contribute to the continuous improvement of the team's development practices and tooling (CI/CD, monitoring, etc.)

Stay current with emerging technologies in data engineering, cloud computing, and cybersecurity to continuously enhance the team's capabilities

What You’ll Need:

Able to work at Columbia, MD Headquarters (3 days per week, subject to change)

A minimum of 2+ years of professional software development experience with a strong emphasis on Python

Experience with the full software development life cycle (SDLC), including design, development, testing, and maintenance

Proven ability to work independently and as a key contributor within a collaborative team

Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical information clearly

And Ideally:

Experience with web scraping (e.g., using Python libraries like requests or BeautifulSoup)

Practical experience with AWS or a similar cloud provider and relevant services for ETL and microservices (e.g., S3, Lambda, SQS/SNS, ECS/EKS)

Proficiency with data normalization and understanding of data structures

Familiarity with message queueing systems (e.g., SQS, RabbitMQ, Kafka)

Experience with CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitLab CI, Jenkins) and a solid understanding of automated deployments

Knowledge of monitoring and logging tools for distributed systems (e.g., CloudWatch, Prometheus, Grafana)

A background or strong interest in cybersecurity or vulnerability management

Experience with database technologies relevant to data storage within an ETL pipeline (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Redis, AWS DynamoDB, Redshift)
