Job Summary Using a variety of automated tools to run electrical flow studies, performs analysis of transmission avenues in support of trading activities to include recommendations of alternative paths which will optimize profits and ensure delivery. Administers integrated transmission agreements. Negotiates and administers interconnections, interchange agreements, and transmission access requests. Prepares economic evaluations and justifications. Duties include analysis and dissemination of information concerning transmission issues including sitting, interconnections, transmission service requests, development activities, plan operation, strategic studies, trading activities, etc.; provides recommendations on transmission issues and their impact on overall power operations. Manages interactions with transmission providers and serves as a transmission operations liaison on all transmission issues.

Responsible for performing electrical load flow studies associated with Calpine’s use of the electric transmission system. Conducts analysis and research on the topology, operation of the transmission grid, and procedures for facilitating electric transmission transactions within various defined market areas. Provides analysis to inform Calpine’s view of locational market pricing across all ISO/RTOs in which Calpine operates.

Job Responsibilities

Knowledge of electrical grid physics, electricity market structures, dynamics, and rules; FTR, CRR, and TCC structures; power plant operations.

Experience with load flow and nodal price modeling software platforms (such as PSLF, PSSE, PROMOD, UPLAN, Dayzer, etc.) and data structures.

Experience with transmission modeling and analytical applications like Excel, SQL, Visual Basic, Python, R, SAS, C++, Java/.NET, etc.

Designing efficient and reliable processes, managing complex processes.

Understanding of ISO market structure and energy commodities.

Performing transmission system studies and market simulations to identify capabilities, limitations, risks, and opportunities.

Supporting trading activities through CRRs/FTRs/TCCs and other transactions.

Providing transmission expertise for commercial development and strategic activities.

Producing market reports and forecasts.

Supporting development of proprietary LMP market modeling and analytics.

Participating in RTO/ISO meetings and gathering intelligence on transmission grid changes.

Supporting analytical and managerial efforts within and beyond Commercial Analytics.

Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering (power systems focus), mathematics, computer science, economics, or related fields. Advanced degrees are a plus. Strong analytical skills required.

7+ years of experience with recent focus on transmission systems planning or operation, automated load flow tools, and transmission procedures.

Knowledge of siting issues, congestion management, and local market structures.
