Sr. Accessibility Specialist Location:
Chicago, Illinois or Houston, TX The Sr. Accessibility Specialist will play a critical role in ensuring that digital products and services are accessible to individuals with disabilities, adhering to relevant standards and regulations. This position requires a strong background in digital accessibility, a deep understanding of accessibility guidelines, and the ability to lead accessibility initiatives across diverse projects. The role involves collaboration with cross-functional teams to integrate accessibility into the design and development processes. Responsibilities:
Understand and apply accessibility guidelines (WCAG, ADA/ACAA) to digital channels. Conduct comprehensive audits on digital channels (web/mobile) using both manual and automated testing to ensure compliance. Perform usability testing with assistive technologies and conduct user testing involving individuals with disabilities. Create and maintain documentation outlining accessibility guidelines, acceptance criteria, best practices, and standards. Provide training and guidance to development, design, and testing teams on creating accessible digital products. Collaborate with designers, developers, content creators, and other stakeholders to integrate accessibility into the design and development processes. Identify accessibility issues and provide detailed solutions to address them, ensuring compliance with accessibility standards. Evaluate and recommend accessibility testing tools and assistive technologies to improve testing efficiency. Advocate for the needs and perspectives of individuals with disabilities within the organization, promoting a culture of inclusivity. Generate reports on accessibility metrics and progress for management and stakeholders. Ensure compliance with legal requirements related to accessibility, addressing any potential legal risks. Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as Computer Science, Information Technology, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related discipline. 8 years of experience in digital accessibility, user experience (UX), or a related field. Experience conducting accessibility audits, evaluations, and implementing accessibility solutions. Proficiency in understanding and applying accessibility standards and guidelines, such as WCAG, ADA/ACAA. Familiarity with assistive technologies used by individuals with disabilities (e.g., VoiceOver, JAWS, NVDA, Dragon Naturally Speaking, ZoomText, TalkBack). Experience using accessibility testing tools and knowledge of best practices for testing digital products (e.g., Deque Axe tools). Understanding of web development technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and their impact on digital accessibility. Relevant certifications in digital accessibility, such as IAAP CPACC or Web Accessibility Specialist (WAS). Strong communication skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams. Ability to advocate for accessibility principles and educate team members on best practices. Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects, ensuring accessibility requirements are met within project timelines. Demonstrated commitment to staying updated on evolving accessibility standards, guidelines, and technologies. Must be eligible to work without sponsorship. Local candidates to Houston or Chicago only – must be willing to work hybrid. Preferred/Plus:
Airline knowledge and familiarity with ACAA (Air Carrier Access Act). Experience developing for accessibility. Knowledge of web technologies (e.g., HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and ARIA). Professional training in using assistive technologies or accessibility certifications. Experience conducting usability tests that include participants with accessibility challenges. $50-65/ HR W2 The specific compensation for this position will be determined by several factors, including the scope, complexity, and location of the role, as well as the cost of labor in the market; the skills, education, training, credentials, and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment.
