Harlem Children's Zone
Overview
Harlem Children's Zone (HCZ) — a world-renowned education and poverty-fighting organization based in New York — seeks an enthusiastic, dedicated, and mission-aligned Managing Director to lead our Operations team.
The Managing Director will provide senior leadership and oversee Facilities, Food Services, and Safety (Core Operations) across 20+ locations in Central Harlem. This role leads three department Directors and partners with senior leaders to ensure Core Operations are efficient and services meet the needs of our locations, students, families, and staff.
Base pay $150,000.00/yr - $165,000.00/yr
Responsibilities
Facilities: Ensure 20+ locations are compliant, structurally sound, clean, and welcoming; foster partnerships with external building entities and their teams.
Food Services: Operate three full-service kitchens in HCZ Promise Academy Charter Schools providing one million healthy meals annually for scholars and staff.
Safety: Maintain safe spaces across 20+ locations, support safety initiatives, and partner with local precincts.
Oversee Core Operations budgets and department Directors; work with Finance to manage a $9M portfolio and capital plan.
Develop and maintain inventory tracking systems; ensure adequate equipment, supplies, and materials.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in facilities management, engineering, business administration, or related; Master's preferred.
Experience in a senior-level operations role within a multi-site complex organization.
Knowledge of building infrastructure systems and regulatory standards (e.g., NYC Department of Buildings, NYC Department of Health, OSHA).
Experience with Building Management Systems (BMS).
Excellent project management, financial acumen, and budget management skills.
Strong leadership and ability to collaborate with stakeholders; on-site work five days a week; some weekends as needed.

Core Operations: Manage budgets and capital expenditures; maintain building systems knowledge; oversee inspections and vendor contracts.
Policies and procedures: Develop and refine Core Operations policies; manage training and safety protocols.
Talent Management: Lead and develop Core Operations Directors and 200+ staff; partner with HR on hiring, onboarding, and performance management.
Project and Risk Management: Manage building projects; respond to safety incidents; conduct risk assessments.
Schedule
Monday – Friday; weekends may be required. Flexible.
