The Road Foreman of Engines manages locomotive engineers and conductors, supervise train service crews to ensure the safe and efficient operations of locomotives and trains in specific areas.

The pay range for this position is $132,600 - $146,700 annually.

Duties And Responsibilities

This is a non-exhaustive overview of the job duties for this position. Oversee operations in coordination with other department managers Manage employees and train operations to optimize On-Time-Performance (OTP) and make recommendations to improve performance Respond to service disruptions within area of responsibility Manage and oversee locomotive engineer certification/recertification requirements Communicate with carrier railroad managers regarding territory operations Manage crew base budget for locomotive engineers. Regular and consistent engagement, participation and promotion of Herzog’s Culture and its essential behaviors are a requirement for this position. Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality are a requirement for this position. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent Must be a Certified 49 CFR Part 240 Train Service Engineer. Minimum 4 years of operating a locomotive as a certified train service engineer, with no violations described in 49 CFR Part 240.117, as train service engineer and/or as Road Foreman. Must have prior satisfactory job performance. Qualified as a designated supervisor of locomotive engineers preferred. Qualified on physical characteristics of territory is preferred. Demonstrate business and financial management experience. Must satisfy qualification requirements as DSLE within 6 months of becoming road foreman. Must have demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills. Demonstrated knowledge of 49 CFR requirements. Demonstrate general knowledge of locomotives and rolling stock. Demonstrate written and oral communication skills that are concise and clear.

Pre-Employment Requirements

Subject to pre-employment background check and motor vehicle report review. Maintain a valid driver’s license and endorsements as required per position. Pass pre-employment DOT physical, medical evaluation, and drug screen due to the safety sensitive nature of this position. This position requires you to pass and maintain a DOT medical evaluation to drive a Herzog commercial vehicle. Successfully complete and maintain any required safety certification and testing on an annual basis.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described below must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential job functions of this role. This position will be physically demanding at times. This is a non-exhaustive overview of the physical requirements of this job.

Able to walk on uneven surfaces up to one-half mile. Maintain balance for an extended period of time while train is in motion. Must be able to be aware of surroundings and follow verbal commands while being exposed to moderately loud noises on a daily basis. Work in a confined access/space environment with a width of 16 inches. Must be able to adapt to various temperature extremes including but not limited to heat, cold, moisture and wind. Regularly sit and stand for an extended period of time. Able to tolerate repetitive movements, squatting/bending, and overhead reaching. Able to lift up to shoulder height and horizontally transfer up to 35 pounds for a distance up to 10 feet. Regularly kneel, bend, squat for extended periods of time. Regularly reach overhead. Regularly grasp/squeeze equipment with a force up to 20 pounds. Regularly ascend/descend a platform with a height of up to 36 inches from the floor. Regularly ascend and descend an 8 step ladder while carrying up to 20 pounds. Must successfully pass color/vision examinations as required by the position. Must be able to hear and distinguish auditory signals as required by the position. Able to work in a safety sensitive work environment.
