Overview
Job Title: Supervising Transportation Engineer, Caltrans — Office Chief, Office of Design Peninsula. Salary: $13,892.00 - $15,782.00 per month. Location: Alameda County. Final Filing Date: 10/13/2025. This is a Caltrans Promotional examination. Applicants must have a permanent civil service appointment with the Department of Transportation and meet the minimum qualifications by the final filing date to participate in the examination. Some work arrangements may be eligible for telework; in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs and Caltrans policy. Travel may be required and is subject to reimbursement guidelines. All communications will be via email.
Job Description And Duties
Under the general direction of the District Division Chief of Design South, the Office Chief for the Office of Design Peninsula is responsible for planning, implementing, and controlling tasks assigned to the Office within budgetary resources while following Caltrans and participating agencies policies and practices. Duties include planning, organizing, directing, and monitoring activities necessary to deliver transportation projects, including large complex projects, intermediate projects, Minor A, Minor B, Toll Bridge Rehabilitation, and Lands and Building projects assigned to the Office. Responsibilities include direct delivery of projects and oversight of projects and activities carried out by Transportation Authorities and local agencies. The incumbent develops, implements, and manages design deliverable tasks and may serve as chief spokesperson for projects at meetings, acting as the contact person within Caltrans and to various outside agency groups, including Federal, state, regional, and local transportation and regulatory agencies. Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a valid certificate of registration as a civil engineer issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers, and one of the following pathways: Experience: One year of transportation engineering experience as a senior level engineer in the California state service. Or II: One year of supervisory or managerial experience equivalent in level to a Senior Transportation Planner in the California state service, and two years of civil engineering work at the Associate Engineer level or higher in the California state service. Or III: Broad and extensive (more than five years) transportation engineering experience, two years of which are equivalent in responsibility to the senior level engineer in the California state service.
Examination Information
This examination will evaluate experience and education (E&E) against the class specification. Candidates should complete the State application (STD. 678) accurately and fully, listing all relevant experience. The examination will not establish a civil service list or transfer eligibility between departments. Candidates will be notified of results. If Out of Class (OOC) experience is used, provide signed and approved documentation.
