Overview
The Gunston School seeks an engaging, collaborative, and knowledgeable educator who is student-centered to fill the position of Associate Director of College Guidance. The Associate Director shares the responsibility for overseeing Gunston’s comprehensive program that takes students through every aspect of the college application process. The Associate Director reports to the Head of School and to the Assistant Head of School. The Associate Director must have a deep understanding of college preparation and the counseling process including course selection and credit requirements, the college search and match, standardized testing and test optional schools, special learning accommodations, the college application and financial aid processes, and the scholarship search and application processes. The Associate Director must possess strong oral and written communication skills along with a high degree of competence in database management.
The ideal candidate will hold a bachelor’s degree and have 3-5 years experience in college counseling or college admissions.
Responsibilities
Close collaboration between the members of the College Office and with the Head of School and Assistant Head of School
The review, development, and implementation of a weekly college seminar curriculum with the 11th and 12th grades
Serving as the school’s AP Coordinator and working closely with the Assistant Head of School who serves as the AP Administrator for the school
Investigating and sharing formal standardized test preparation for the 11th grade
Uploading testing results to Naviance and preparing an annual report of data for the administration, faculty, and Board of Trustees
Design and implementation of annual programming for families and students about athletic recruitment, standardized testing, financial aid, and the college application process
An annual meeting with each 11th grade family
Devising prospective college lists for juniors each spring, taking into account their educational goals as well as financial considerations.
Keeping track of active college lists and admission decisions in Naviance.
Along with the Director, completing a careful review and feedback on college essays and supplemental writings during the college application process
In collaboration with the Director, networking with college admissions professionals to improve the Gunston’s visibility and reputation to increase the active recruitment and admission of our students
Working with the Director and the Communications Office to prepare an annual school profile for the school’s website and to share with colleges and universities
Being an active member of professional organizations including College Board, NACAC, PCACAC, ACCIS, and AIMS
Remaining informed on trends in college admission, higher education, educational testing, best practices in teaching and learning.
Qualifications The ideal candidate will hold a bachelor’s degree and have 3-5 years experience in college counseling or college admissions.
