Purpose

Under the general supervision of the Associate Vice President for Public Safety/Chief of Police, and with daily oversight by the Police Commander, the Police Officer routinely works an assigned shift and performs patrol duties on foot, bicycle or by vehicle to protect students, faculty, staff, campus visitors, property and facilities; enforces laws and traffic regulations; apprehends violators; provides information and assistance to the public; conducts investigations; and protects life and property within CSUMB’s jurisdiction.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Patrols the Campus and adjacent areas on foot, bicycle, or by vehicle and answers calls to protect persons, property and facilities. Performs crime prevention assignments, enforces laws, traffic regulations and safety regulations on the campus and adjacent areas; apprehends or arrests violators. Investigates and prepares reports on accidents, property damage, fires, law violations, thefts, and disturbances of the peace; gathers evidence; makes arrests and appears in court as required. Provides security for large gatherings of faculty, staff, students or visitors to the campus; may conduct investigations related to assigned cases and investigate irregularities; takes action within policy and may contact authorities as needed. Performs other duties that enhance campus safety and may assist Public Safety/Police support staff. Uses a community-policing approach to engage with the campus community to create partnerships that reduce crime and build trust. Work assignments include emergency response, traffic control, crime prevention programs, administering first aid, and other policing services as required. Performs other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent. Successful completion of a P.O.S.T. certified program, including Basic Course Certificate. Must have no felony convictions Must have no misdemeanor convictions containing elements of domestic violence Must successfully complete fingerprint and records check including local, state and federal criminal records Must satisfy citizenship requirements detailed in Government Code 1031 (a) and 1031.5. Be a U.S. citizen, or a permanent resident alien who has applied for citizenship and obtains citizenship within three years of application date Must be a minimum of 21 years of age by sworn appointment Must have good moral character as determined by a background investigation conducted prior to appointment Must be free from any physical, emotional, and mental condition which might adversely affect the exercise of police powers Must be able to read and write at required levels as determined by testing

Knowledge And Abilities

Working knowledge of current law enforcement methods and procedures; current criminal codes and laws; community-based policing; effective interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; ability to think and act effectively in emergencies and sensitive situations. Valid California driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Criminal Justice, Administration of Justice, or related field. Basic bilingual proficiency. Ability to use a personal computer for entry of police reports into the automated records management system (ARMS). Demonstrated understanding of CSUMB’s Vision Statement.

Special Conditions Of Employment & Position Designations

Designated as Campus Security Authority (CSA); must participate in Clery Act training and reportable crimes as required. Must possess and maintain a valid California driver’s license, pass Defensive Training, and be insurable under university liability coverage. Designated as a sensitive position with responsibilities for safety, access to controlled substances, building keys, and access to sensitive information.

Various environments including indoor, outdoor, and adverse conditions. Rotating shifts, nights, weekends, holidays. May be required to travel. Personal protective equipment required including police uniform, duty belt, and weapon. Follow campus safety mandates.
