Overview The George Washington University Police Department is seeking highly motivated individuals for the position of Police Sergeant. The GW Police Department provides primary law enforcement and public safety service to a diverse university population of 25,000 students, faculty, and staff across two urban campuses in Washington, DC. Reporting to the Police Lieutenant, the Police Sergeant serves as the first-line supervisor for their assigned shift. This position supervises the patrol division and is responsible for protecting persons and property on campus by applying police skills and patrolling techniques to maintain a safe environment. The Sergeant provides security and protection to the University community by patrolling areas or buildings to enforce DC laws and GW administrative ordinances, and to provide on-site supervision during emergency and routine situations.

This position manages daily assignments and weekly duty rosters, based on observation and assessment of officer skills and performance. The Sergeant acts on behalf of the Lieutenant during absences, approves and posts rosters or special assignments, and serves as a liaison with other departments during events or incidents and with outside law enforcement agencies.

Responsibilities and duties

Provide faculty, staff, and students with highly efficient and professional protection and service by being present and interacting with the campus community

Oversee the day-to-day activities of the University's community law enforcement services

Work with the Shift Lieutenant to schedule officers for adequate shift coverage, vacation relief, and call-off replacement; coordinate additional security for special activities and events as needed

Partner with the Shift Lieutenant to plan and conduct shift meetings and roll calls to share information

Review and update GWPD policies and procedures; provide subject matter expertise to ensure accuracy and enforceability

Assist in evaluating and recommending new equipment, supplies, or materials to improve security enforcement

Conduct performance evaluations of officers for their assigned shift and assist in determining future staffing needs

Monitor and ensure staff compliance with departmental policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements

Review body-worn and in-car camera video for incident reports to ensure compliance with policy

Ensure all community policing activities are documented in ARMS for tracking and review

Review administrative forms/reports related to Public Safety incidents and operations; approve reports written by officers and assist Security Officers as needed

Ensure timely and accurate reporting

Testify in court or administrative hearings as needed

Liaise with law enforcement staff regarding crime prevention measures

Attend and participate in meetings pertaining to Community Policing operations and services

May serve on special assignments such as Recruitment, Training, Evidence/Property and Crime Prevention

Perform the duties of Campus Police Officer as needed; may work weekends, holidays, or different shifts

Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude assignment of related duties.

Minimum Qualifications Qualified candidates will hold a high school diploma or GED plus 5 years of relevant professional experience as a police officer (internal or within a federal, state, military, or municipal agency), including at least three years of supervisory experience; or a Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant field plus one year of relevant experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must meet requirements to possess a District of Columbia Special Police Commission through DC's MPD SOMB as described in DC Municipal Regulations Title 6-A, Chapter 11 within 120 days of employment.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications

Must possess and maintain a DC Special Police Commission and meet requirements for commission, including firearms and other weapon systems

Before employment, must successfully complete a physical, drug screen, and mental examination approved by GW Police Department

Must have completed an accredited state or federal law enforcement training academy to include DC

Must have a valid driver’s license and be eligible to drive GW vehicles for the duration of employment

Proof of U.S. citizenship and at least 21 years of age as required by MPD/SOMB

Maintain proficiency with firearms and police equipment throughout employment

Available to work rotating shifts

Preferred Qualifications

Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills

Proficient knowledge of criminal law and related policy (Jeanne Clery Act) or Clery Act experience in a university or non-profit environment
