University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center
Research Scientist, Osteosarcoma, Levi Lab
University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, Texas, United States, 75215
Overview
UT Southwestern offers a culture of teamwork, professionalism, and a rewarding career. The Levi laboratory in the Division of Burn, Trauma, Acute and Critical Care Surgery within the Department of Surgery has an opening for a Research Scientist with an Osteosarcoma focus. The Levi lab’s mission is to improve the lives of people living with skin and musculoskeletal injuries and diseases through rigorous science and compassion. Current projects address the molecular biology behind tissue fibrosis and the repair and regeneration process in tendon, muscle, and bone. The laboratory integrates multiomics approaches with investigations of musculoskeletal development, homeostasis, repair, and regeneration, using transgenic animal models and bioinformatics to understand cell–cell interactions in the stem cell niche and potential therapeutic strategies to promote faithful tissue repair. The job summary notes that the position plans, coordinates, directs, and participates in work on smaller research projects or major units of large research projects in the field of specialization, requiring extensive training and experience. Responsibilities
Support ongoing bench and animal work related to tendon injury/fibrosis, muscle injury/fibrosis, or bone/tendon/muscle regeneration. Perform routine molecular bench work and animal model handling (injections, surgeries, sample collection). Engage in downstream processing including histology, immunofluorescent staining, confocal imaging, flow cytometry, cell culture, and single-cell and bulk RNA sequencing under supervision of the PI. Laboratory duties
Animal breeding, genotyping, handling, and surgery. Molecular biology techniques (PCR, qPCR, western blotting, RNA/DNA extraction, cloning, CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing, next-generation sequencing). Flow cytometry and mass spectrometry; histology from tissue harvest to embedding, sectioning, staining, and confocal microscopy. Design and execute experiments to investigate molecular mechanisms; plan and develop standard operating procedures; review and analyze data; adjust techniques as needed. Confer with industrial, governmental, or other groups regarding progress or results; maintain a respectful and inclusive laboratory environment; ensure a clean, functional workspace. Analyze and interpret data using relevant software and statistical methods; stay current with advances; contribute to developing new methodologies; prepare findings for publication and presentations; participate in grant writing and fundraising; collaborate with interdisciplinary teams. Assist in training and supervision of junior personnel (technicians, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows). Preferred Experience
Experience with molecular biology techniques (PCR, qPCR, western blotting, RNA/DNA extraction, cloning, CRISPR/Cas9, NGS). Experience with animal handling, breeding, genotyping, and surgery; single-cell transcriptomics; histology pipeline; flow cytometry and mass spectrometry. Excellent written and oral communication and organizational skills; ability to perform data analysis and interpretation with bioinformatics tools and statistical software. Education and Experience
Education: PhD with major coursework in the field, or Master’s or Bachelor’s with major coursework in the field of assignment. Experience: 5 years of research experience with PhD (plus 2 years at Senior Research Associate level) or 7 years with Master’s, or 9 years with Bachelor’s, at appropriate senior level as specified. Job Duties
Plan, organize, coordinate, direct, and participate in assigned scientific or medical research projects; select key personnel; determine goals; supervise staff and review work; plan experimental protocols. Review and analyze results; revise techniques as indicated by data; compile and submit results; prepare papers, reports, and abstracts for publication; design or adapt equipment as needed. Plan and supervise training of technicians and laboratory personnel; supervise groups performing routine to complex tasks; confer with external groups on progress or results. Perform other duties as assigned. Benefits
