POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for the overall safety and well-being of our team members, including creating a culture of zero at-risk behaviors, leading innovative safety initiatives, managing the execution of our safety program, and in collaboration with leadership and management, building a best-in-class safe work environment for all Team Members, subcontractors and the clients being served. The Safety Director is responsible for driving strategic and tactical initiatives to minimize risks, enhance team member safety, and effectively implement the Company’s behavioral based program – Safety 24/7. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Lead and Management:
Lead and manage a team of safety professionals, providing direction, guidance, and support to ensure effective implementation of the company’s overarching safety & health management system and best practices across all locations. Foster a collaborative environment that encourages continuous improvement and safety standards. Develop leadership capabilities of safety managers, ensuring consistent application of safety practices across all sites. Operational Leadership:
Oversee the effective management of the safety & health management system across multiple projects. Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive safety policies and programs that align with business goals , best practices, and regulatory requirements. Ensure that safety initiatives are integrated into operational processes. Safety Program Leadership:
Partner with the VP of Safety in planning and executing all functional safety initiatives, ensuring alignment with business goals and strategies. Collaborate with senior leadership to develop long-term safety goals, strategies, and risk management plans. Communicate across the health and safety leadership team to manage programs and integrate improvements. Risk Assessment and Management:
Oversee and evaluate the safety programs, risk assessments, and hazard analyses for effectiveness and continuous improvement. Collaborate with safety managers to develop and implement effective risk mitigation strategies, ensuring a proactive approach to safety management. Metrics and Reporting:
Oversee the management and analysis of safety data to identify trends, potential risks, and areas for improvement. Manage and ensure preparation of reports on safety performance, incidents, and regulatory compliance for senior leadership. Review safety metrics, trends, and improvement opportunities with the VP of Safety and internal stakeholders. Project Management:
Lead and manage health and safety program projects, ensuring alignment with the overall safety strategy and objectives of the business. Develop project plans for safety initiatives, including timelines, resource allocation, and key performance indicators. Provide leadership to safety managers and other stakeholders to implement safety program projects. Point of Contact:
Serve as a point of contact for any federal, state, or municipal safety or risk management authority and/or personnel, (i.e. OSHA, MSHA, EPA, etc.). Serve as the point of contact with the client as needed. Work directly corporate insurance personnel in investigating and managing incidents to minimize loss. Maintain regular communication with the VP of Safety and other leaders while ensuring confidentiality of information. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree in safety and health or equivalent combinations of technical training and experience. 17+ years of experience with safety and health in the construction industry with a minimum of 8 years of experience in a leadership role preferred. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Technical skills: Extensive knowledge of OSHA, MSHA, DOT, and EPA regulations as well as other state/federal safety regulations and company safety policies/procedures. Demonstrated leadership in developing and implementing safety programs in a large-scale, multiple site company. Experienced in leading safety staff to coach, conduct, and document safety and health audits, inspections, and/or behavioral observations and conversations. Ability to effectively lead through managers in executing initiatives and driving team performance to achieve results. Strong organization and administrative recording skills to manage multiple safety managers and teams across various projects/facility locations. Exhibits superior written and verbal communication skills, effectively conveying complex safety information to various stakeholders at multiple projects or facilities. Experienced in leading safety staff to apply business unit operational means and methods, including leading and lagging indicators; uses this understanding to achieve results. Strong project management skills focused on safety initiatives, including planning, execution, and evaluation. Excels in analyzing safety data to identify trends, training needs, and root cause analysis to facilitate proactive interventions that enhance safety culture. Advanced competency in comprehensive risk mitigation strategies and policy/procedure development to influence solutions across locations. Ability to work in high production environment (50+ hours/week, including nights and weekends) and respond quickly and effectively under pressure and deadlines. Leadership Skills: Strong leadership capabilities to coach and lead safety managers, cultivating leaders and fostering a high-performing safety culture. Demonstrated ability to manage the effectiveness of teams, with positivity and professionalism. Strategic thinking with the ability to drive safety initiatives across large, complex projects. Develops leadership skills and abilities in safety managers to manage teams and to implement appropriate corrective and preventative actions. Critical thinking skills to prioritize safety initiatives that align with business goals and optimize the deployment of safety staff across multiple locations. Exhibits the ability to make swift and informed decisions in real-time to effectively address time-sensitive and complex operational challenges. Builds, influences, and encourages strong relationships with safety staff and operations management, positively influencing the safety culture. Actively meets with safety managers to plan individual development, provide mentorship and opportunities for skill enhancement, and foster a culture of growth and learning. Provides guidance, coaching, and support to help safety managers enhance their skills and achieve their professional goals. Actively manages the development of safety managers, providing leadership and opportunities for skill enhancement, fostering a culture of growth and learning. Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills. Effectively convey the company’s overarching safety & health management system, culture of safety, and best management practices to diverse audiences and various stakeholders, promoting a shared understanding. Demonstrates a proactive approach to own leadership development. Stays updated with industry trends and actively pursues opportunities for growth and improvement. Role model to safety staff and operate with honesty and integrity. CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS: Valid Driver’s License, good driving record required. CPR/First Aid certification preferred. OSHA 30-Hour and 10-Hour Trainer certification preferred. GSP, ASP, CSP or CHST Designation preferred. Seniority level
