San Francisco Campus For Jewish Living (SFCJL) is a center of excellence in providing a continuum of care in San Francisco's Excelsior neighborhood. The campus includes the Frank Residences (luxurious assisted living and memory care), the Jewish Home and Rehabilitation Center (long-term skilled nursing, short-term rehabilitation, and an acute psychiatric unit for older adults over age 55), and the Jewish Home and Senior Living Foundation.

Position Overview The AGPH Recreation Specialist facilitates therapeutic group and individual programs and communicates with patients, families, surrogates, conservators, nurses, physicians, and other health team members. The AGPH Recreation Specialist works with the interdisciplinary team to provide active treatment to help accomplish patient goals. The AGPH Recreation Specialist assists with the completion of mandatory documentation as needed and works under the supervision of the Director of Recreation Therapy.

Essential Functions

Assessment / Reassessment: Ensure an initial activity assessment and admission note are completed within 72 hours of admission under the supervision of the Director of Recreation Therapy. Ensure a progress note is completed weekly, noting progress toward patient treatment goals, changes in symptoms/behaviors, and changes in condition.

Treatment Planning: Ensure the treatment plan is multidisciplinary and includes individualized therapeutic interventions within 72 hours of admission and updates goals and interventions as needed under the director’s guidance.

Interdisciplinary Team (IDT): Actively communicates with the IDT to foster active treatment. In the absence of the Director of Recreation Therapy, attend the IDT meeting and report on patient observations, behaviors, and symptoms as they relate to the treatment plan.

Communication: Provide information about patients to the Director of Recreation Therapy verbally and/or in writing, using the Recreation Therapy Treatment Note.

Documentation: Maintain accurate documentation under the supervision of the Director of Recreation Therapy, including but not limited to:

Antecedents to inappropriate behaviors, changes in cognition/physical status, and reports to licensed nurse and/or physician for review and potential treatment changes.

Admission assessments & admission notes; Progress notes at least weekly; Individual and group participation treatment notes; Treatment plan.

Treatment/Relationship: Lead group or one-on-one treatment programs, including expressive arts therapies, coping skills, recreational, social, spiritual, educational, leisure skills, etc.

Connect with patients in a therapeutic manner to promote wellness; ensure all patients are treated with dignity and respect; maintain a safe space in the milieu and set appropriate limits.

Provide supportive counseling, mental health education, stress management, and coping skills education in group or 1:1 sessions.

Educate patients (or patient support) on the treatment plan and the role of meaningful activity in wellness.

Notification: Inform the Director of Recreation Therapy, charge nurse, and/or IDT of new behavior problems promptly.

In-services as assigned; maintain a daily/monthly activity calendar; support volunteers or interns; account for sharps, equipment, and supplies at the end of each group; secure and clean materials in a locked area after sessions.

Understand and follow all rules, guidelines, and protocols in the SFCJL JHRC Employee Handbook; perform other tasks as assigned by the Director of Recreation Therapy.

Qualifications

Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) or a Master’s degree in Music, Art, or Drama Therapy; or a Bachelor’s degree with certification in music, art, or drama therapy. Two years of experience in geriatrics preferred, and at least one year in an acute psychiatric hospital preferred.

CPI – Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (completed within 3–6 months of start date).

Experience planning and implementing individual and group therapeutic activities.

Ability to collaborate with others and interact effectively with patients, families/responsible person, and the interdisciplinary team.

Knowledge of State and Federal laws and regulations governing acute psychiatric hospital and mental health settings.

English: ability to read, write, and speak fluently.

Desire to work with older people with mental health diagnoses; ability to generate enthusiasm and cooperation; ability to make independent decisions when necessary; cultural sensitivity; prompt documentation under supervision.

Physical Demands

Ability to lift, push, and pull at least 25 pounds; ability to stand or sit for extended periods; ability to bend, stoop, stretch, twist, and reach; fine motor skills; good visual and auditory acuity.
