Java/AWS GIS Application Programmer
for a contract in Silver Spring, MD. Wage/Salary Range: $80-100k This contract works for an agency that operates approximately 285 desktop/laptops, a mix of 90 physical and virtual Linux servers, 25 physical and virtual Windows servers, storage devices, and a mix of network devices. The agency operates a Linux server farm located in the cloud in AWS and hosts more than 60 scientific, oceanographic, and geospatial applications, which provide real-time scientific, oceanographic, and geospatial information to warn of pending storms and storm surge and support marine navigation. In addition, a real-time Continuity of Operations (COOP) infrastructure is located in the cloud via AWS, with the capacity for providing rolling three days of real-time data without a database structure, and the potential of becoming a hot or warm site. Note: These positions are hybrid and require the contractor to be on site in Silver Spring, MD on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday each week. Essential Duties & Responsibilities The ideal candidate will provide scientific, oceanographic, engineering and Geospatial Information System (GIS) application programming, system design, and system maintenance support services to ensure the efficient operation of computing resources. Develop new, enhance and maintain existing CO-OPS software applications, and adhere to the CO-OPS’s change management and governance procedures. Create new and maintain existing software applications in various programming languages, including Python, Java, Javascript, Fortran, C/C++, Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), CSS, shell scripting and related technologies, including charting tools such as Highcharts, GNU plot, Mapping API tools (Google Maps, Esri, Leaflet), Content Management System (i.e Wordpress), ArcGIS, SQL, Single-Sign-on (i.e. ActivClient), and AWS technologies such as Elastic Beanstalk, S3, command line interfaces, etc. Collaborate with CO-OPS users to derive application requirements. Ability to port legacy systems to new operating systems, recommend improvements in application design to improve application performance and security, and provide accurate and reliable oceanographic data ingestion and dissemination services to ensure high data quality. Provide troubleshooting and operational support to ensure data availability and accuracy. Address bug fixes for related applications and optimize applications in the cloud. Support the software life cycle elements, including requirement analysis, design, testing, implementation, documentation, maintenance, and training. Maintain consistency across the development, testing, and production environments, including the configuration libraries required for the specific scientific and GIS programming languages and technologies. Required (Minimum Necessary) Qualifications
Must have a minimum of 5 years of demonstrated IT development experience. Develop, enhance and maintain existing CO-OPS software applications, and adhere to the CO-OPS’s change management and governance procedures. Experience working with users to derive application requirements. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, And Other Characteristics
AWS Cloud experience. MS Office suite experience. Excellented oral and written communication skills. Ability to interact with senior level management both at the customer and corporate levels. Work Environment The job is performed in an office setting with exposure to computer screens and requires extensive use of a computer, keyboard, mouse, and multi-line telephone system.
