Lead Software Engineer
to join our team at Kirtland Air Force Base, NM, to support execution of the Space Systems and Hardware Integration for Novel Space Experiments (SSHINE) program for the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Integrated Experiments and Evaluation Division (RVE). This position requires a strong understanding of space requirements, testing, and the operational environment. The role provides software engineering to support the RVE mission, driving data-informed decisions at speed and delivering space-based capabilities for the Joint Force and the nation. The successful candidate will be a self-starting leader and problem solver with initiative, excellent communication skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams. Responsibilities
Development of space and ground system algorithms and software (e.g., anomaly prediction and detection; data aggregation and trending analysis; vehicle fault detection) to support the RVE mission. Troubleshoot development and operational incidents, identify root causes, implement fixes, and document preventive measures. Provide direct software development support for the RVE Ground systems requirements. Manage software configuration control processes and ensure stakeholder requirements are met. Evaluate and adjudicate software deficiency reports. Offer expert consultation on quality assurance and software safety practices to government/industry teams. Provide software development expertise to anomaly investigations and system development IPTs. Optimize system performance and troubleshoot issues related to container orchestration, networking, and resource management. Advise on hardware and software functionality and performance specifications. Collaborate with stakeholders to develop test plans and evaluate results. Provide multi-domain model building and simulation assistance for space sensors, systems, and mission CONOPS development. Collaborate with software development teams to architect, deploy, and maintain applications. Support model and analysis tool software development, data acquisition, and detailed analysis. Stay up to date with industry best practices, trends, and emerging technologies for potential implementation. Participate in technical discussions, trade studies, and working groups. Collaborate with cross-functional teams (product management, UX/UI, quality assurance) to define and deliver software solutions that meet customer needs. Provide regular updates, reports, and presentations on software development progress, achievements, and challenges to stakeholders. Design process automation and scripts for provisioning, monitoring, and managing software deployments to reduce manual steps and improve reusability. Communicate highly technical problems and solutions to senior leadership. Work as a trusted partner with the customer by delivering actionable insights about emerging technologies and with technically-minded external partners. Qualifications
10+ years of systems engineering experience related to space and/or ground systems. Experience with DoD space missions and programs. Knowledge of DoD Systems Engineering policies, practices, and procedures. Experience in engineering related to space programs. Ability to understand DoD/USSF systems engineering processes and documentation. Ability to work with military or DoD civilian clients and manage professional relationships. Education
Required: Bachelor's degree in STEM, Information Technology, computer science, or similar from a regionally accredited institution. Desired: Master's degree in STEM, Information Technology, computer science, or similar from a regionally accredited institution. Clearance
Active Top Secret clearance with SCI eligibility. Location and Travel
Full-time, on-site in the Albuquerque, NM vicinity with up to 25% travel within the continental United States. Travel to Government agencies and/or other contractor locations may be required to support design and test requirements reviews, briefings, conferences, and related activities. Additional
