The COBOL Software Developer III is responsible for designing, developing, maintaining, and supporting business-critical applications built on COBOL and mainframe technologies. This role requires advanced knowledge of COBOL programming, strong analytical skills, and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver reliable, high-performance software solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Design, code, test, debug, and document COBOL programs for business applications. Enhance, maintain, and support existing mainframe applications to ensure reliability and performance. Participate in system analysis, requirements gathering, and solution design. Optimize existing code for efficiency and maintainability. Collaborate with business analysts, QA teams, and system administrators to deliver quality software. Troubleshoot and resolve production issues in a timely manner. Ensure compliance with coding standards, security policies, and best practices. Mentor junior developers and provide technical guidance where needed. Prepare technical documentation including flowcharts, diagrams, and program specifications. Participate in code reviews and continuous improvement initiatives. Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent experience. 5–7+ years of experience in COBOL programming and mainframe development. Proficiency with COBOL, JCL, CICS, VSAM, DB2, and related mainframe utilities. Strong understanding of batch and online transaction processing systems. Experience with system testing, debugging, and performance tuning. Familiarity with source code management tools (Endevor, Changeman, or similar). Ability to analyze complex systems and provide innovative solutions. Strong communication and collaboration skills. Experience in financial services, insurance, or government systems is a plus. Problem-solving and critical thinking. Strong attention to detail. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Time management and prioritization.
