Overview
Field Underwriting Specialist – Hybrid or Remote Opportunity. Responsible for managing a book of business for profitability and growth by reviewing new and renewal business, assessing risk, preparing quotes, and responding to coverage questions within the assigned authority. Builds strong relationships with agents to drive positive business flow. Work is performed with limited supervision and significant independent judgment. Location and requirements determine hybrid or remote status.
Responsibilities
Delivers profitable outcomes on less complex niche business through effective risk selection.
Analyze, select and price business with prescriptive terms and conditions of coverage.
Review inspection reports, location, risk, financial and other tools to identify new or unresolved concerns.
Coordinate with Risk Control for inspections, follow ups, and service needs for insureds.
Drive corrective action or remediation strategies on renewal accounts.
Escalate referrals for accounts needing higher level underwriting review or approval.
Adhere to service expectations and regulatory compliance by timely release of renewals, non-renewals and conditional notices.
Achieve portfolio KPIs by developing and fostering relationships with distribution partners (portfolio reviews, voice of the customer, limited travel).
Coordinate with the distribution team to build pipeline, resolve issues, and oversee change management.
Communicate regularly with portfolio team members on agency health and market conditions affecting the portfolio.
Accountability & Culture
Cultivate a high performing culture with superior customer service and business acumen.
Mentor support staff and conduct peer audits; approve underwriting decisions (LOAs) for lower authority levels.
Assist in training new hires and internal promotions through ongoing mentoring and feedback.
Review, mentor, and approve referrals for lower authority level associates.
Perform other related work as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in business administration, finance or related field preferred.
Holding or working towards an insurance designation preferred (CPCU, IIA, etc.).
Seven years of progressively responsible experience in commercial underwriting, including 1–3 years in a property and casualty company.
Experience writing business for churches or religious affiliated institutions preferred.
Broad knowledge of common terms, practices, processes and regulations in the P&C insurance industry.
Ability to apply advanced underwriting concepts and practices within P&C underwriting.
Strong negotiating skills, sound judgment, and clear verbal and written communication.
Advanced analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
Strong customer service orientation.
Advanced knowledge of Microsoft products, including Excel (pivot tables, vlookups) for strategic analysis.
Attention to numeric detail and ability to manage large workloads and meet tight deadlines.
Compensation
$68,400 - $105,000 commensurate with experience, plus bonus eligibility
$75,300 - $115,000 commensurate with experience in CA, CT, MA, NJ, NY, and PA, plus bonus eligibility
