Conduct neutral and impartial hearings relating to searches, arrests, bail, temporary detentions, and civil issues Conduct legal research and analysis Ascertain facts and apply them to relevant legal principles Maintain order and decorum in highly charged, sensitive circumstances Receive and account for money The work schedule has rotating shifts that include weekends and holidays Magisterial Region 2 includes multiple counties and cities in Virginia; primary assignment is in the Lynchburg area of the 24th Judicial District Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education Excellent English speaking, listening, and writing skills Strong interpersonal skills Computer proficiency Citizen of the United States Be or become a resident of Virginia prior to appointment Meet all the qualifications of a magistrate under Va. Code § 19.2-37 Preferred Qualifications Relevant legal experience, training, or education Virginia State Bar membership Additional Considerations
The Canons of Conduct for Virginia Magistrates apply to this position. See canons in the Virginia courts’ resources. If not currently certified as a magistrate, the successful candidate must attend an intensive four-week training course and pass a certification process that includes a written examination and extensive on-the-job training. The successful candidate will be required to sign a training repayment agreement, reimbursing the Office of the Executive Secretary for training costs if the magistrate leaves employment during training or within two years of completing training. All candidates are subject to a criminal history background check before being offered employment. Special Instructions to Applicants
