The Sheriff’s Crime Laboratory has an opening for a

Latent Print Examiner . This is a non-sworn position characterized by a high degree of responsibility for accuracy and quality of work, with great attention to detail in performing specialized analysis and comparison of latent prints for the identification of persons. Location: County of San Diego. The Department emphasizes a commitment to fair and equitable selection processes and maintains practices such as Blind Applicant Screening to minimize personal information in hiring decisions. This position includes opportunities for salary increases during June 2026 and June 2027 as described below. Salary Increases

June 2026 – 3.90% increase to base pay (3.5% Across-the-Board + .40% Market Adjustment) June 2027 – 3.40% increase to base pay (3.0% Across-the-Board + .40% Market Adjustment) Responsibilities

Perform specialized analysis and comparison of latent prints for identification of persons. Ensure accuracy and maintain a high standard of quality in all work. Hiring Process and Timeline

Job Offer and Background Process begins: Shortly after interviews. Note: Current County employees may be excluded from additional background screening. Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results. Anticipated Start Date: Based upon successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed date. If not selected for this interview process, you may have the opportunity to compete for future vacancies. Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency in forensics, administration of justice, evidence technology, biology, chemistry, or a closely related field, which must have included one (1) year of internship with an accredited forensic services provider or criminal justice agency in latent print development or with an accredited forensic services provider or criminal justice agency analyzing friction ridge impressions for usability and making comparisons; OR An associate's degree from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency in administration of justice, evidence technology, biology, chemistry, or a closely related field; AND at least one (1) year of experience with an accredited forensic services provider or criminal justice agency in latent print development, AND at least one (1) year of experience with an accredited forensic services provider or criminal justice agency in analyzing friction ridge impressions for usability and making comparisons; OR Four (4) years of experience with an accredited forensic services provider or criminal justice agency analyzing friction ridge impressions for usability and making comparisons. Certification as a Latent Print Examiner through the International Association of Identification (IAI) may substitute for up to one year of experience in analyzing friction ridge impressions for usability and making comparisons for all three options listed above.
