Job Overview This position is based out of the Garlington Health Center located in NE Portland, OR. Schedule: Tuesday and Wednesday, 9:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., plus an hour on Monday, Thursday, and Friday for phone coaching. Position: Counselor III. Program: Dialectical Behavioral Therapy Services.

Position Description The Counselor III (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) serves adults with chronic suicidal ideation, self-harm behaviors, and/or emotion dysregulation. This role involves suicide risk assessments and crisis management. This position supports a trauma-informed, person-first approach and promotes an inclusive work environment.
Essential Responsibilities
Manage patients at high risk for suicide and self-harm, including conducting acute risk assessments and crisis stabilization as needed.
Provide weekly individual therapy and phone coaching to clients in the full DBT program.
Teach weekly DBT skills groups to a broader range of clients.
Teach and model DBT skills and prosocial behaviors while helping clients reestablish a sense of self.
Respect client rights, maintain professional boundaries, and follow ethical guidelines.
Provide clinical consultation to other Cascadia programs as needed.
Attend weekly DBT consult group for training, case consultation, and therapeutic support.
Provide weekly individual therapy to clients in the full DBT program.
Provide DBT phone coaching within business hours on request to clients in the full DBT program.
Teach weekly DBT skills groups with 5–12 clients per group; coordinate care with other Cascadia therapists.
Facilitate a biweekly DBT graduates’ group for clients who have completed at least a year of DBT.
Conduct comprehensive assessments of clients' mental health status and treatment needs.
Develop individualized treatment plans based on assessment findings and therapeutic goals.
Collaborate with psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate integrated care and support for clients.
Monitor clients' progress, evaluate outcomes, and adjust treatment plans as needed.
Regulatory & Compliance
Comply with laws, regulations, policies, and procedures under which the program and company operate.
Assist in crisis situations as appropriate; follow protocols with the treatment team.
Respect client rights and responsibilities; demonstrate professional boundaries and ethics.
Maintain accurate documentation to ensure compliance with agency policies, local/state/federal regulations, and billing requirements.
Understand safety regulations and evacuation procedures; participate in regular safety drills.
Complete assigned employee training in compliance with program and company requirements.
Provide guidance, support, and training to other staff in alignment with company mission and values.
Participate in scheduled staff meetings, supervision sessions, and other departmental/company meetings.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Education
A Master’s Degree in a behavioral science field from an accredited college or university is required. Must demonstrate the competencies to become credentialed as a Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP) as outlined in the Oregon Administrative Rules (OAR). Certification must be current and in compliance with the OARs.
A Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) credential is preferred.
Experience
A minimum of one year’s experience delivering services to individuals with mental health challenges is required.
Three years’ experience delivering services to individuals with mental health challenges is preferred.
Specialized Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to conduct Mental Status assessments and formulate diagnoses according to DSM criteria.
Understanding of recovery model, motivational interviewing, and illness management and recovery.
Strong knowledge of evidence-based practices and strength-based case management.
Proficient in computer use and EMR systems; data entry and retrieval.
Other
Must be able to travel to multiple locations throughout the Portland Metro area.
Working Conditions Environmental:
Work in clinical offices, acute care settings, and community settings including client residences, shelters, and other social service sites. Breaks may be interrupted. Be aware of safety considerations, potential for violence, and exposure to biohazards.

Work involves unpredictability and flexible time management; requires sound judgment.
