Overview
WHAT YOU DO AT AMD CHANGES EVERYTHING
We care deeply about transforming lives with AMD technology to enrich our industry, our communities, and the world. Our mission is to build great products that accelerate next-generation computing experiences – the building blocks for the data center, artificial intelligence, PCs, gaming and embedded. Underpinning our mission is the AMD culture. We push the limits of innovation to solve the world’s most important challenges. We strive for execution excellence while being direct, humble, collaborative, and inclusive of diverse perspectives.
THE ROLE As a Senior Member of Technical Staff in the GPU Libraries group, the GPU Kernel Engineering role provides technical leadership and strategic support across the AMD Radeon Open Ecosystem (ROCm) ecosystem. Your experience will be critical in creating and enhancing GPU kernels for deep learning model operations such as normalization and convolution. You will engage with internal GPU library teams and open-source maintainers to ensure seamless delivery of high quality and performance kernels. This position requires a deep knowledge of GPU architectures and compiler technologies as well as the use of advanced engineering principles and a continuous improvement approach.
THE PERSON A skilled engineer with strong technical and analytical expertise in C++ development within Linux environments. The ideal candidate will thrive in both collaborative team settings and independent work, with the ability to define goals, manage development efforts, and deliver high-quality solutions. Strong problem-solving skills, a proactive approach, and a keen understanding of software engineering best practices are essential.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead collaborative teams across libraries to design, implement, validate, and deliver key software library capabilities, ensuring successful integration with GPU kernels into broader systems. Validate and provide significant input to the software roadmap.
Initiates, influences, and drives architecture, design, and documentation efforts across teams. Work with principal engineering staff to plan and execute technical governance activities across integrated libraries and engineering teams.
Draft technical designs and approaches that holistically consider constraints, performance, and roadmap commitments. Self-manage and lead others in technical execution and uplift delivery commitments of colleagues.
Review project scope and seek opportunities to broaden and align work in collaboration with library owners and engineering colleagues. Document what is known.
Coach and mentor engineering staff according to internal best-practices and as part of the regular software development lifecycle in an agile environment. Participate in key engineering talent reviews with technical managers.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
Extensive and broad hands-on experience with C++, with relevant applied experience using CUDA, HIP, OpenMP, MPI, or OpenCL for accelerated computing on CPUs and GPUs. Familiarity with other programming languages (Python, Rust, Go, Javascript).
Knowledge or applied experience with popular AI/ML frameworks like PyTorch and TensorFlow.
Applied experience with performance engineering and continuous integration for high-performance computing applications. Experience with improving build robustness, regression management techniques, and using software deployment and orchestration management systems (Jenkins/Docker/Kubernetes) and numerical methods and analysis.
Experience with open-source software development including collaboration with community maintainers and submitting contributions, and leading or implementing Agile, Scrum, Kanban or other methodologies.
Experience implementing professional software engineering best practices, requirements elicitation and analysis, scoping/estimation, coding standards, code reviews, version control, build processes, testing, and continuous integration.
ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS
Advanced degrees, such as M.Sc. or M.Eng., are preferred.
