MSEM 678 Advanced Data Analysis with R , at the graduate level in Fall 2025. This course counts as an elective towards MSEM requirements and can also contribute to the GIS certification due to its geospatial module. The course content and learning objectives can be tailored based on the instructor's expertise. The focus remains on environmental data and geospatial analyses. Course description : This course covers statistical methods for environmental data analysis, emphasizing decision-making under uncertainty. It builds on ENVM603 Quantitative Methods, covering analysis of variance, experimental design, non-normal distributions, multiple regression, geostatistics, uncertainty quantification, time series, and extreme value statistics. Students will use R/Rstudio for hands-on practice and learn to interpret scientific statistical analyses. A course project will involve designing and analyzing a study focusing on data analysis and modeling. Learning Goals and Objectives : Formulate hypotheses and apply appropriate statistical tests based on data. Critically assess statistical analyses in scientific literature. Understand statistical methods for geospatial data. Develop skills with current software and analytical techniques. The course involves weekly 3-hour sessions combining lectures and labs, running for 8 weeks from mid-October to mid-December, excluding Thanksgiving. It can be delivered in-person on weekday evenings (6:30-9:30 PM). Grades are due within two weeks after the last class, and two office hours per week are recommended. The provided material can be adapted to the instructor's preferences. Responsibilities include delivering the syllabus, engaging students, evaluating performance, providing feedback, and assigning grades. Compensation is estimated at $4,512 for the semester. Job Requirements: Minimum: MS in Environmental Science, Earth Science, Environmental Engineering, Chemistry, or related field; teaching or TA experience is a plus.
