The Village of Waunakee (population 16,387) is seeking an innovative, strategic, and community-focused leader to serve as its next Director of Parks and Recreation. Waunakee is one of the fastest-growing communities conveniently located in the vibrant capital region of Madison, Wisconsin. Residents enjoy top-tier services and amenities, including 36 parks, conservancies, and a multi-use, multi-generational community center. The chosen candidate will be succeeding a director who served in the position for over 25 years, with a well-established department and tremendous opportunity moving forward. The Director reports directly to the Village Administrator and oversees all functions related to parks and recreation programming (planning, organization, coordination and implementation), coordinates the acquisition and development of new parkland, and plans the development and improvement of existing park land area. The Parks and Recreation Director also manages the recreation functions that occur at the Village Center, including staff management, facility rental and use by outside groups, policy development, and general facility planning. Performs related work as required. Key Responsibilities: Serves as the manager of the Village Center’s recreation functions. Is responsible for policy and procedure creation and implementation, marketing, and scheduling, and staffing. Interprets the scope and need for park and recreation programs and activities. Oversee the development and coordination of a well-rounded schedule of recreation programs and activities for all age groups and interest levels. Evaluates the effectiveness of parks, recreation, and Village Center recreation programs and makes necessary progress reports to the Village Administrator and Parks and Recreation Committee. Develop departmental policies and procedures pertaining to park, recreation, and Village Center programs, services, and facilities. Responsible for the recruitment, selection, and supervision of all permanent, part-time, seasonal, and volunteer staff of the department. Prepares an annual operating budget including annual Operating Budgets, Capital Projects and Park Acquisition and Development Fund Accounts. Plans and coordinates the development and/or improvement of existing park areas (i.e., athletic fields, play areas, tennis courts, shelters, etc.) Plans and coordinates the acquisition and development of new park sites and facilities. Coordinates the development, updating and implementation of the Village Five-Year Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan. Works cooperatively with the Director of Public Works and staff in the utilization, preparation, and maintenance of park and recreation facilities. Establishes and maintains collaborative working relationships and good communication with a variety of individuals within the community, the School District, various Village departments, and Village leaders. Demonstrates tact, diplomacy, positivity, energy, and patience with a commitment to improving the quality of life in the community. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in parks and recreation management, public administration, business administration, or closely related field of study. CPRP or CPRE certifications preferred. Five years of progressively responsible administrative and management experience in parks and recreation operations management, including supervisory responsibilities – preferably in a community setting. Possession of, or the ability to obtain a valid Driver’s License. Salary range is $99,444.80 to $127,337.60 (authorized hiring range of $99,444.80 to $115,356.80) with excellent benefits.
