Atomic Machines
Staff Manufacturing Automation Engineer
Atomic Machines, Emeryville, California, United States, 94608
Atomic Machines is ushering in a new era of micromanufacturing with its Matter Compiler technology. This full-stack technology enables new classes of micromachines to be designed and built by offering manufacturing processes and a materials library that is inaccessible to semiconductor manufacturing methods.
We are seeking an experienced Staff Manufacturing Automation Engineer to join our dynamic team. This role is pivotal in driving operational excellence in medium to high-volume manufacturing environments by optimizing processes, enhancing equipment performance, and spearheading the design, development, and implementation of cutting-edge manufacturing equipment.
What you'll do:
Take full ownership of the performance and maintenance of manufacturing equipment (manual, semi-automatic, and fully automated), ensuring optimal functionality and reliability.
Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules to minimize downtime and extend equipment lifespan.
Develop and maintain technical documentation, including SOPs, WIs, maintenance manuals, and training materials.
Monitor equipment performance metrics, analyze data, and identify trends to drive continuous improvement initiatives.
Lead efforts to upgrade equipment to align with evolving production requirements.
Analyze existing manufacturing processes to identify inefficiencies, bottlenecks, and areas for improvement.
Develop and implement strategies to improve production efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance product quality.
Conduct time studies, root cause analyses, and risk assessments to support process improvements and troubleshooting.
Engage with the mechanical design team and influence the design and build of custom automated equipment tailored to specific manufacturing needs.
Develop detailed engineering drawings, schematics, and specifications for DFX improvements to equipment design.
Oversee the installation, testing, and commissioning of new equipment on the production floor.
Collaborate with device design teams and process equipment/platform design teams to ensure seamless integration of automated systems with existing manufacturing operations.
Collaborate with software and hardware engineers to integrate third-party developed automated equipment with existing manufacturing systems.
Manage projects from conception to completion, ensuring timelines, budgets, and quality standards are met.
Coordinate with cross-functional teams, including R&D, quality assurance, and production.
What You'll Need:
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. Advanced degree preferred.
8+ years of experience in manufacturing engineering, with a focus on automation and equipment design.
Proven experience designing, building, implementing, and sustaining automated systems in a production environment (robotics is a plus).
Experience in semiconductor, solar, EV, or similar high-tech industries, with an understanding of their processes.
Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Onshape) for equipment design.
Hands-on experience with building automation from assembly drawing to manufacturing and production.
Knowledge of manufacturing processes, such as machining, assembly, welding, or material handling.
Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles and Six Sigma methodologies.
Knowledge of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems and Arena software.
Experience with document control and release processes.
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks effectively.
