Civil Project Designer
in our Fairfax, VA office. As a Civil Project Designer, you will be responsible for leading design efforts as a project manager or lead engineer for low to moderate complexity projects and collaborating with senior staff for the delivery of larger and high complexity projects. You will work closely with a team of engineers and consultants to provide engineering solutions and advice to clients to ensure positive outcomes. Primary responsibilities include engineering analysis, design field inspections, writing reports, preparing permit applications, site drainage and grading designs, and learning the Civil Engineering trade. This position will work within the project’s monetary budget, train, mentor, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to meet project goals and client expectations. Principal Responsibilities: Direct and train Civil Design Technicians to assist in completing reports, exhibits, plans and specifications and permit applications as required by the project’s contractual scope. Lead design efforts for the analysis of civil site design projects for commercial, residential, industrial projects, etc.; utilize engineering software and tools to create detailed designs, specifications, and calculations according to code requirements and IMEG standards. Complete and oversee permit applications for a variety of municipalities in coordination with the team, client, and reviewing jurisdiction. Oversee projects through bidding and construction administration phase. Interact with clients to understand their needs, gather project requirements, and communicate technical information effectively; build and maintain client relationships through professional communication. Work as part of a project team to support the execution of consulting projects; lead efforts in project planning, budgeting, and scheduling tasks to meet project deadlines and objectives; document design decisions and client instructions while monitoring progress related to percent complete and fee expended. Analyze engineering problems and propose innovative solutions; collaborate with senior engineers and consultants to develop practical and efficient solutions. Stay up to date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in civil engineering; contribute to research, development, and innovation efforts within IMEG. Prioritize safety and regulatory compliance in all aspects of engineering work; interpret state and local design criteria and apply to project needs. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including other engineers, architects, and project managers, to deliver integrated solutions that meet project goals. Identify potential project problems and seek advice from the Project Manager. Required Skills & Abilities: Knowledge of industry standard engineering software, primarily Civil 3D. Proficient with pipe networking and road corridors. Proficiency in design techniques, tools, and concepts involved in the production of technical plans and specifications. Strong technical and analytical skills including proficiency in principles of civil engineering. Ability to train and mentor less experienced staff. Able to lead teams with others that utilize industry standard software that assists with civil engineering analysis and design. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to clearly communicate in both oral and written form to individuals or groups. Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. Attention to detail and problem-solving skills. Eagerness to adapt to new challenges. Proficient with MS Office Suite including Word, Excel, and Outlook. Ability to travel up to 10% with occasional overnight stays. Education & Experience: Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Civil Engineering, or equivalent required. 3 years of experience minimum required, 4 preferred, in the building design consulting industry. OR Associates degree, or certificate, in utilizing Autodesk Civil 3D or equivalent software tools or engineering preferred. 7 years of experience minimum required, 8 preferred, in the building design consulting or construction industry.
