A STS Tax Senior Manager, State and Local Taxation is responsible for advising clients of the tax implications relating to their business objectives, recommending alternate courses of action, as well as identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations. In this role, the STS SALT Senior Manager will be charged with marketing, networking and business development within his/her area of experience and specialization and recognizing potential changes in tax policy and applying new policies to tax compliance. In addition, the STS SALT Senior Manager will work with the Core Tax Partners, Directors, and Senior Managers to provide SALT expertise to their clients. Responsibilities
Research — Identify complex situations, outline issues, and determine appropriate sources of research; analyze facts and sources; develop relationships with state tax authorities. Tax Compliance — Conduct detailed reviews of tax returns; identify significant state tax issues; respond to notices; assist with exam support. Tax Consulting — Draft tax memoranda, opinions, and other documentation; apply applicable state tax sub-specialties; develop tax planning processes; ensure engagement letters are adopted and manage engagements; assist in developing consultative selling strategies; manage client expectations. Tax Controversy — Represent clients before tax authorities on contested issues. Tax Related Software — Use GoSystems, tax research databases, and other software. Tax Specialization — Provide technical client service for multi-state companies; negotiate settlements and voluntary disclosures; draft technical memos. Accounting for Income Taxes – SFAS 109 — Prepare tax accrual workpapers. ASC 740-10 — Apply industry standards and firm policies related to FAS 109, FIN 48, and sales tax and unclaimed properties. Strategy Development — Review studies of tax implications, develop alternative actions, and brainstorm new ideas to reduce taxes or expenses; assist with researching tax strategies; suggest marketing approaches for new client acquisition. Other duties as required. Supervisory Responsibilities — Supervise day-to-day workload of STS SALT staff, ensure training on tax software, evaluate performance, deliver feedback, and act as Career Advisor as appropriate. Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Bachelors degree in Accounting or related field required Masters degree in Accounting/Taxation or J.D. preferred Experience
Eight+ years of prior experience in state and local/multistate taxation required Prior experience supervising tax professionals on a project or engagement basis required Prior experience preparing and/or reviewing tax provisions preferred Prior experience with corporate taxation, consolidations and partnerships preferred License/Certifications
CPA certification or other relevant certification preferred Software
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel and Word) preferred Exposure to tax applications and research tools preferred Language
