Job Description
We are seeking skilled and motivated professionals of all experience levels to join our team as Data Center Mechanical Commissioning Engineers (CxEs). The Mechanical CxE will commission mechanical systems in data centers, ensuring they meet top performance and reliability standards. This role requires a deep understanding of mission-critical environments, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively under pressure.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, testing and/or validation of: chillers, water loops/components, cooling distribution equipment, air handling units (AHUs), air conditioning units, fan coil units (FCUs), pumps, heat exchangers, cooling towers, humidification systems, and Building Management and Automation Systems (BMS). The CxE should also have knowledge of electrical components involved in the above mechanical systems, including motors, MCCs, ATSs, VFDs, control panels, and electrical supply systems. This role involves supporting data center construction/commissioning activities, so working hours may include nights and/or weekends. This is an onsite, client-facing role with travel to client locations (approx. 90% or more).
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, equivalent professional experience, or related field experience (e.g., mechanical field service technician, data center technician, or military).
Key Responsibilities
Conduct commissioning activities for mechanical systems, their electrical components, and BMS systems in data centers.
Create and implement detailed commissioning plans, procedures, and checklists for Level 2–Level 5 systems.
Review design documents, submittals, and equipment specifications.
Perform site inspections, functional performance tests, and system verifications.
Witness testing of equipment during commissioning and validate sequence of operations.
Collaborate with project teams, contractors, engineers, and data center operators.
Support team goals on-site and remotely as needed.
Diagnose and resolve system performance, reliability, and safety issues;
Document results and generate commissioning reports.
Provide support to data center staff on operation and maintenance.
Ensure adherence to industry standards, codes, and regulations.
Attend project meetings and provide technical expertise as needed.
Other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands
Frequent handling of small parts and tools; ability to remain in a stationary position as needed.
Ability to move through office and critical facility environments, including confined spaces.
Exposure to varying temperatures and outdoor elements; work on active construction sites.
Frequent climbing of stairs and ladders; occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.
Qualifications
Experience in commissioning, designing, or constructing mechanical systems, especially in data centers or mission-critical environments.
Strong knowledge of HVAC, electrical supply, and control systems.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work with cross-functional teams and clients.
Problem-solving skills, adaptability, and attention to detail.
Ability to read and interpret construction documents and specifications.
Experience with commissioning software and tools; proficiency with MS Office; familiarity with Procore and CxAlloy is a plus.
Ability to travel to various data center locations as needed.
Experience Levels
Entry-Level: 0–1 years of experience in commissioning or related field (mission-critical facilities).
Mid-Level: 2–5 years of experience with project management capabilities and data center systems knowledge.
Experienced-Level: 6+ years of experience with complex mission-critical systems and leadership experience.
