The
Senior SQL Database Administrator (DBA)
will play a key role in supporting the organization’s mission-critical databases and applications. This position works closely with project development teams (scrum/sprint teams), Clemson’s Oracle Database Administrators, and IDMS DBAs to provide comprehensive database administration, performance tuning, and support for numerous application and infrastructure databases. The ideal candidate will combine deep technical expertise with strong collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills to ensure high availability, reliability, and performance of database systems. Daily Duties & Responsibilities
Collaborate with development and product teams to advise on database design, data model extensions, and performance optimization.
Provide
hands-on SQL development
and application support following Microsoft best practices.
Work closely with
Oracle and IDMS DBA teams
to maintain test, staging, and production databases.
Develop and document
database management procedures
for operations and maintenance.
Design and execute
data migration plans
to accommodate transfers from existing data stores.
Coordinate with
external vendors, service providers, and other State agencies
as needed.
Monitor and analyze
database performance , identifying and implementing solutions for optimization.
Participate in a
24x7 on-call support rotation
to ensure database reliability and availability.
Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Required Skills & Experience

The Senior SQL DBA role encompasses four major areas:
technical expertise, leadership, project management, and interpersonal communication.
Candidates must demonstrate excellence in all. Proven experience as a
SQL Database Administrator
supporting enterprise applications in
Linux and/or Windows environments .
Hands-on experience with
Data Guard
or equivalent database replication and disaster recovery solutions.
Demonstrated success supporting
web-based application development teams
using SQL as the database foundation.
Expertise in database design, optimization, and performance tuning for enterprise environments.
Strong understanding of
database scalability , high availability, and security best practices.
Preferred Skills & Experience
(ranked in order of importance)
Knowledge of
Oracle Enterprise Manager .
Healthcare industry
experience and familiarity with managing
PHI/PII data .
Experience with
data encryption
and
traffic encryption protocols .
Experience with
vendor management
and third-party integrations.
Medicaid Management Information System (MMIS)
or
Medicaid operations
experience.
Public sector or government project experience.
Understanding of
IT development lifecycles
and implementation projects.
Proven ability in
project planning, resource allocation, and effort estimation .
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present technical information to management and stakeholders.
High integrity and sound judgment—able to make informed decisions and raise critical concerns when necessary.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams and external partners.
Education & Certifications
Bachelor’s degree
in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business, or a related field required.
Master’s degree
preferred.
SQL training or certification from a
recognized professional organization
is beneficial (not required).
