Overview

Staff Computer Vision Engineer, Perception. Metropolis is an artificial intelligence company that uses computer vision technology to enable frictionless, checkout-free experiences in the real world. We are reimagining parking to enable millions of consumers to just 'drive in and drive out.' We envision a future where people transact in the real world with speed and convenience, and we aim to power checkout-free experiences anywhere you go to make everyday experiences remarkable. Who you are

Metropolis is looking for a Staff Computer Vision Engineer to lead the design and development of perception algorithms and systems that power Metropolis’s “AI for the Real World.” We are developing a broad suite of computer vision systems spanning edge and cloud environments to enable checkout-free experiences in various applications. As a senior technical leader, you will drive optimization, integration, and validation of advanced perception models for real-time deployment on edge and cloud platforms, addressing challenges in object detection, tracking, recognition, video analytics, and multi-modal systems. You will work with cross-functional teams throughout the perception system lifecycle, driving innovations that enhance accuracy, reliability, and performance of core applications. Excellence in this position involves leading innovation in computer vision, delivering impactful results, and fostering growth through technical leadership and mentorship within the ML team. You must thrive in an entrepreneurial, fast-paced environment with multiple stakeholders. You should be willing to break new ground, roll up your sleeves, and solve real-world problems. If you have a background in computer vision and perception and are excited to develop systems that go into the real world, please reach out. What you'll do

Architect and develop advanced perception algorithms for object detection, tracking, semantic segmentation, and scene understanding. Identify gaps and bottlenecks in perception performance and system design; drive solutions from concept through deployment. Define and implement metrics and KPIs to rigorously evaluate perception system accuracy, robustness, and scalability across real-world conditions. Drive system-level debugging and root cause analysis for perception failures in production environments. Collaborate with hardware, ML, and software engineering teams to improve data pipelines, model deployment frameworks, and sensor configurations. Mentor and lead by example, promoting best practices in scalable architecture, model evaluation, and engineering excellence within the computer vision team. Research and prototype new ML/deep learning approaches applicable to perception problems. Participate in cross-team initiatives to improve system reliability, labeling quality, simulation-based validation, and production-readiness of perception models. Stay ahead by researching, prototyping, and integrating emerging deep learning techniques and tools into the perception stack. What we're looking for

M.S. or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or related field with focus on computer vision or ML 8+ years of industry experience developing and deploying perception algorithms in real-world applications Strong proficiency in modern deep learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, Qualcomm Chip) and classical CV libraries (e.g., OpenCV) Deep expertise in one or more: object detection, multi-object tracking, segmentation, depth estimation, or sensor fusion Experience deploying ML models on edge devices and cloud platforms (e.g., GPU/embedded) Excellent programming skills in Python or C++ Strong understanding of 2D/3D geometry and image processing Experience with large-scale datasets, data curation, annotation, evaluation, Airflow pipelines, and messaging platforms (MQTT, Kafka, ROS2) Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), Docker, and Kubernetes Familiarity with ML model training, data annotation, and model evaluation Understanding of agile processes and CI/CD tools (GitHub Actions, Jenkins) Proven technical leadership and mentorship in high-performing teams Publications or patents in CV or applied ML Our Stack
