Lead Transit & Rail Systems and Rolling Stock Engineer
Lead Transit & Rail Systems and Rolling Stock Engineer position located in the Salt Lake City area, with co-location between the WSP South Jordan, UT office and the client facilities in the Salt Lake City area. The role focuses on planning, design, integration, and delivery of complex rail and transit systems and rolling stock, requiring collaboration across disciplines to ensure technical excellence and seamless system performance. This dynamic position involves work in both rolling stock and systems/signals areas. Responsibilities Systems Engineering & Design
Participate in requirements gathering, analysis, and traceability for complex, multi-disciplinary systems. Assist in the development of system architectures, functional block diagrams, Systems Breakdown Structures (SBS), and sequence diagrams. Support the creation of Interface Definition Documents (IDDs), Interface Control Documents (ICDs), and Systems Integration Management Plans. Contribute to the development and execution of system testing and validation plans. Plan and participate in design reviews. Integration & Collaboration
Work closely with cross-functional teams, including designers, contractors, vendors, and operators, to ensure effective system integration. Facilitate interface resolution workshops and design coordination meetings. Align design integration activities with project stage gates and delivery milestones. Compliance & Quality Assurance
Ensure that Validation and Verification (V&V) processes are fully defined and executed across interfacing systems. Support verification of integrated design compliance with system performance requirements, applicable codes and standards, and client expectations. Continuously improve systems engineering processes and documentation standards. Stakeholder Engagement
Interact with clients and stakeholders to communicate technical topics clearly and professionally. Collaborate with internal and external teams to ensure stakeholder needs are met and expectations managed. Rolling Stock Specific Work
Oversee and develop high level vehicle requirements for upcoming procurements. Develop requirements for rolling stock, both for rehabilitation/refurbishment and for new builds. Determine, as required, the need for contract addenda and modifications. Integration & Collaboration (Rolling Stock)
Work closely with other SMEs (civil/track, mechanical) to troubleshoot day-to-day issues as well as with new vehicle acquisitions. Plan and facilitate interface requirements for various vehicle systems and network infrastructure. Interact and plan engagements with Customer Experience specialists during the vehicle design process. Compliance & Quality Assurance (Rolling Stock)
Review and make technical recommendations relating to manufacturers’ proposals and plans. Site visits to manufacturers’ plants and facilities as part of the procurement process. Establishment of inspection plans for vehicle manufacturing and delivery process. Engagement with Rolling Stock Providers
Plan and organize industry engagement to stay up to speed on cutting-edge technologies. Plan and organize technical engagements with rolling stock providers during the procurement process. Other Responsibilities
Demonstrate leadership and mentorship to junior staff. Support project planning and execution, including scope, schedule, and budget management. Demonstrate flexibility and leadership in fast-paced environments with tight deadlines. Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical and/or Mechanical Engineering, or closely related discipline (or equivalent experience). 7 to 10 years of relevant post-education experience in engineering with prior systems and/or rolling stock engineering. Proficiency with engineering principles, practices, processes, and design/build on major infrastructure projects. Strong ability to perform technical computations, interpret plans and specifications, and compare to applicable regulations. Effective interpersonal and communication skills for engineering and non-engineering audiences. Demonstrated self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization in a dynamic environment. Ability to work independently with minimal oversight and provide guidance to junior team members with adherence to QA/QC. Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, discipline-specific design software, and related tools. Strong problem-solving skills to apply technical knowledge to testing results and data analysis. Experience coordinating and directing subcontractors and others to complete tasks safely and efficiently. Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to WSP health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies. Ability to work schedules that may extend beyond the typical workweek as project requirements dictate. Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements. About WSP
