Chief Engineer
Overview
The Chief Engineer (CE) is the onsite leader of building, equipment and grounds condition of the hotel. This position will lead and/or perform maintenance and repairs, and preventative maintenance, to all areas of the hotel. The CE is responsible for maintaining a clean and organized maintenance shop and for the security of the hotel inventory and assets such as tools, supplies, furniture, fixtures, and equipment. The CE’s focus on guest and associate satisfaction, expense control and product quality and will contribute to the hotel’s overall goals. This role is part of the Executive Leadership Team for the hotel.
Responsibilities
Maintains the energy management computer system
Initiates the new perpetual inventory for control and issue of supplies
Keeps a log of monthly repair and maintenance expenditures
Compiles a monthly project list
Assigns and supervises all maintenance and repair work of the Engineering Department, including:
General Maintenance
HVAC/Refrigeration
Electrician
Plumber/Kitchen Mechanic
Carpenter
Painter
Engineering Administrative Assistant
Conducts departmental training on specific equipment as needed
Confer with vendors to obtain product and service information such as price, availability and delivery schedule
Process purchase requests for items needed by the Engineering Department
Supervise work of outside contractors as needed and ensure the work is properly performed and the job site is left clean
Supervise Mechanical, Public Area, and Guest Room preventative maintenance per standards and schedules
Attend scheduled meetings as required
Other duties as assigned; may work in other areas of the hotel to assist operations
Qualifications and Requirements
General knowledge of skilled trades such as HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, electrical, equipment mechanics, and carpentry. Advanced knowledge or certification in one of these areas is required
Minimum of 5 years maintenance experience and supervisory experience in a building/hotel maintenance operation
College degree or technical school graduate preferred
Professional certification and license if required by law
Strong communication skills when interacting with supervisors, hotel staff and guests
Reading and writing abilities to document tasks, order supplies, receive instructions, and read manuals
Mathematical skills, including basic math, percentages, quantities, and variances
May be required to work nights, weekends, and/or holidays

Physical demands
Stand, use hands for mechanical tasks, handle objects, tools and controls; talk and hear
Walk, reach with hands and arms, climb scaffolds and ladders
Lift or move up to 100 lbs., and objects up to 300 lbs.
Communication: ability to read, analyze, and interpret blueprints and mechanical drawings
Computer skills: proficiency with Outlook, Word, Excel, EMS, PMS & guest response software
Work Environment The work environment is varied and includes both indoor and outdoor settings. Outside work may involve inclement weather. Work may occur in both guest contact and non-guest contact areas. Noise levels are usually moderate; protective equipment and safety precautions per tool manufacturer and OSHA standards must be followed. High voltage equipment may be involved; appropriate safety equipment must be used.
