Overview

The Academic Specialist is charged with modeling and building a positive, productive and joyful learning environment to ensure a high-quality experience for all children, most specifically for students with significant cognitive disabilities. The Academic Specialist collaborates with the special education department and leadership team to design rigorous specialized instruction for students on their caseload. An effective Academic Specialist is data-driven and designs high-expectation instruction for students with disabilities, in collaboration with co-teachers. As a key member of the school leadership team, the Academic Specialist functions on a 12-month schedule as a teacher-leader and reports to the campus Special Education Coordinator. Provide Tier 3 interventions to students with IEPs Design and implement literacy and math instruction for multiple special education pull-out groups daily Design and deliver standards-aligned, student-centered instruction to meet rigorous goals for students with disabilities Use data to develop rigorous IEP goals for each student on your caseload Design and implement high-quality specialized instruction across multiple grade levels Create and refine service delivery schedules for specialized instruction Monitor progress of specialized instruction to inform refined services or goals Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress toward IEP goals Provide instructional leadership to ensure specialized instruction aligns with other student services Serve as a member of the Multi-Disciplinary Team and collaborate with general education and SST teams to align instruction with curriculum Maintain compliance for all students on your caseload Write and update Present Levels of Performance and IEP goals annually; submit quarterly IEP progress reports Coordinate with related service providers to ensure appropriate service delivery Qualifications

Educational background and work experience 2+ years of lead teaching experience as an Interventionist or Special Education Teacher in an urban public school with a track record of high student achievement. Bachelor’s degree required; concentration or advanced degree in special education or literacy/math intervention preferred. DC Prep staff are on duty at their assigned campus Monday–Friday, with start times around 7:15 am and early release on professional development Wednesdays Occasionally, staff may be asked to report to different campuses for professional development or network events Clerical duties related to instructional materials, student records, attendance, assessments, etc. Morning, lunch, and after-school duties as assigned Additional responsibilities may arise during the school year; DC Prep will provide ample notice for mandatory events Physical Demands
