Compensation Salary Range: The current minimum salary for Telephone Maintainer is $37.16 per hour for a 40-hour week increasing to $43.72 in the sixth year of service. These rates are subject to change. Benefits include night and weekend salary differentials, paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, a comprehensive medical plan and a pension plan.
Responsibilities Maintainers, under supervision, install, maintain, service, troubleshoot and repair various types of telephones, telephone cables and lines, fiber-optic equipment and lines, emergency, fire, and security alarms, intercoms, public address systems, and clocks; splice and maintain multiconductor telephone cables. They service telephone and communication systems and related equipment in subway, surface, and elevated structures (stations, tunnels, enclosures, and related buildings); keep records; operate a motor vehicle; and perform related work.
Some physical activities and conditions: working outdoors in all weather, distinguishing signals on equipment, wearing respirator equipment when required, distinguishing colors, visual inspection of equipment, reading blueprints and schematics, using hand tools, crawling into and out of manholes, working on or near subway tracks, climbing extension ladders, and lifting and carrying heavy tools and equipment.
Education And Experience Requirements You must meet the following requirements:
Four years of full-time, satisfactory experience as a fully trained technician at the journey level in the installation or maintenance of various types of telephone and/or telecommunication equipment with a telephone company and/or other companies with large installations of telephone equipment; or
Three years of full-time satisfactory journey-level experience plus completion of one of the following before obtaining journey-level status:
Two years of satisfactory full-time experience as a helper, apprentice, or trainee performing or assisting in the described work; or
Graduation from a trade school or technical school with a major study in telecommunications, electrical or electronic technology totaling 600 hours; or
Graduation from a vocational high school with a major study in telecommunications, electrical or electronic technology or a related field; or
An associate degree or higher in telecommunications, electrical or electronic technology or a related field from an accredited college or university.
Qualifying part-time experience will be credited on a pro-rated basis.
The vocational/technical schooling must be approved by an appropriate accrediting body. The college/university must be accredited by recognized agencies.

Requirements To Be Appointed Driver License Requirement: Must have a valid Motor Vehicle Driver License in New York with no disqualifying restrictions. Serious moving violations, license suspensions or accidents may disqualify. The license must be maintained for the duration of employment.
Drug Screening: You must pass a drug screen to be appointed, and you may be subject to random drug and alcohol tests during employment. If you previously tested positive or refused testing, you may need SAP evaluation and treatment per federal law to be appointed to this safety-sensitive position.
Residency: New York City residency is not required.
English Requirement: Must understand and be understood in English to perform duties.
Proof of Identity: You must show identity and right to work in the United States prior to employment.
Additional Information Training: Formalized training may be required during probationary period. Failure to complete training may result in termination.
