GIS and Data Manager (Full-time w/ benefits)
This position is based at the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy and supports the Conservation and Community Science Department with GIS spatial analytics and data management for ecological monitoring programs.
Compensation Base pay range: $85,000.00/yr - $85,000.00/yr
Organization Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy (Parks Conservancy) is the nonprofit partner of the National Park Service, collaborating with the Presidio Trust, partners, donors, and the community to support the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA). The GGNRA includes sites such as Muir Woods National Monument, Fort Point National Historic Site, Alcatraz Island, Crissy Field, Mori Point, Lands End, and the Presidio of San Francisco.
The Parks Conservancy engages at the intersection of national park sites, local communities, social justice, and climate resilience. Our staff are dedicated to enhancing public awareness and providing volunteer and educational opportunities in the parks. Position overview Are you excited to provide Geographic Information System (GIS) spatial analytics and mapping support, and build, document, and manage data lifecycles for a wide range of complex projects and ecological monitoring programs? The ideal candidate works collaboratively yet is self-motivated; implements data management best practices; utilizes and understands ecological or natural resources data; maintains scientific rigor; and works proficiently with multiple data types and programming languages.
Responsibilities include building, documenting, and managing data lifecycles; enhancing or building integrated natural resources data storage strategies and systems; assisting with software administration for ESRI GIS products and relational databases; developing QA/QC procedures for data integrity and tracking; collecting, analyzing, and disseminating geospatial and tabular data; creating data visualizations and supporting interpretation for partnership projects; providing training and technical support to staff and GIS users; and collaborating with leadership, staff, agency partners, and consultants to meet data-driven goals. You will work across multiple teams to support data collection, geospatial analysis, interpretation, and visualization needs, and coordinate with the Information Services department on software and database administration.
This is an exempt, regular, full-time position. It is based at our office in Fort Cronkhite, Sausalito, CA, San Rafael, CA, or San Francisco, CA, as negotiated. Work is hybrid, with a mix of telework, office work, and on-site project work. The Parks Conservancy currently requires a minimum of four full days per month on-site; additional onsite days may be required.
Reports to Director of Conservation and Community Science
Essential functions and responsibilities
Data Management and Organization: Organizes and manages GIS and program databases; curates GIS metadata and database libraries across platforms including ArcGIS; manages geospatial data collection hardware inventory.
Data Analysis and Dissemination: Builds and documents data lifecycles; analyzes geospatial data; creates data visualizations (charts, StoryMaps, dashboards, interactive figures) for internal and external use; develops QA/QC protocols for data integrity.
Collaboration and Support: Administers GIS software with Information Services; provides technical guidance; supports staff with data-driven insights and data management; assists with contractor scopes of work and review deliverables; provides technical assistance as needed.
Supervision: May supervise an intern.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities
Proficient in data management best practices and theory; understanding of data standards; experience with QA/QC and FAIR/open data principles; familiarity with coding practices relevant to languages used; ability to stay up to date on software updates.
Proficient in multiple platforms and programming languages (e.g., MS Excel VBA, SQL, ESRI Arcade, R, Python, Java); proficient in ESRI ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, Survey123, Field Maps; working knowledge of data visualization tools (Plotly, dashboards, StoryMaps) and AI tools.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively; strong problem solving and relationship-building across diverse teams.
Education and experience
BA/BS in GIS, data science, environmental science, ecology, geography, data management or related field, or equivalent experience.
Minimum 3 years of relevant GIS and data management experience.
Certifications
ESRI Technical Certification or equivalent desirable but not required.
Driver’s license in good standing; eligible to drive company vehicles after DMV clearance.

Physical requirements and work environment Primarily desk-based work with some fieldwork; hybrid work arrangement described above.
