Rehearsal For Life’s after school theater program, Freelance Players, is looking for a dynamic, creative teaching artist to join their team as Troupe Director for their youth performing arts troupes. As Troupe Director you will lead and work in collaboration with the troupe creative team to rehearse and produce an original musical while nurturing an environment of community, creativity and self-expression. As a process-based multi-arts program dedicated to empowering young people, it is our ultimate goal that through the creative process we are creating a transformative space where all young people feel seen, heard and celebrated for who they are. We are looking for someone who will support this goal! Troupes meet once a week in the afternoon until production week when they meet every afternoon. Approx. 4-3 hrs/wk during rehearsals, Approx. 20-25 hrs/wk during production week (one week a session, twice a year).
Fall Session Runs Approx: September-January
Spring Session Runs Approx: February-May
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Distribute script (and minor edits when necessary) and score to the cast and creative team.
Oversee auditions and casting of the show in alignment with the mission and vision of the organization.
Develop and execute artistic vision for production and collaborate with Music Director and Choreographer on realizing that vision.
Create rehearsal plan for the session.
Attend, oversee, and actively participate in all scheduled rehearsals: Rehearsals- once a week after school, Production weeks- Monday-Friday afternoon rehearsals the week leading up to the performances, Performances- at least two performances per troupe per session to be determined by the Troupe Director (generally on Friday and Saturday).
Attend Rehearsal for Life and Freelance Players events and meetings as needed (e.g. Winter Party and Spring Festival).
Serve as point of contact with the venue, families of participants and creative team providing schedules and program information in collaboration with Creative Directors.
Communicate and collaborate with costume designer to plan costuming needs and schedule.
Maintain open communication and timely response to communication with Creative Directors.
Collaborate with the Choreographer and Music Director on the community and relationships built within the troupe.
Observe and mediate student behavior and skill building to support evaluation measures and inform practice.
Demonstrate an understanding and implementation of RFL missions and goals.
Qualifications:
At least 2 years of direct experience directing theater in an arts education environment.
Demonstrates knowledge of teaching skills, confidence boosting and self-esteem development, behavior management, and conflict resolution.
Demonstrates knowledge and ability to teach a wide variety of theater and acting techniques.
Ability and enthusiasm for working with 25+ children in an arts education environment.
Ability and enthusiasm for working in a creative and collaborative environment.
Demonstrate an understanding and implementation of RFL missions and goals.
Interest in seeking and engaging in continuous knowledge of social and emotional learning (SEL) skills and effective K-12 instructional practices.
