WSP is looking for a Safety Manager to join our Construction Management team in Herndon, VA. This position will be physically based at our client’s field office in Alexandria, VA.
Your Impact
Job Duties:
Responsible for the overall safety and security oversight for the contractors of the Long Bridge project and responsible for the safety and security of the Project Management Services Support team
Ensures that construction and rail safety policies and procedures are in-place for the PMSS and the Design-Build teams.
Coordinates with the VPRA Director of Safety and staff to ensure the Design-Build teams and the PMSS staff are operating in accordance with VPRA policies.
Responsible for ensuring that construction worksites are safe for workers and comply with applicable regulations.
Identify potential hazards and work conditions that could lead to safety issues and develops safety protocols and mitigation plans in conjunction with the Design-Build teams to reduce risks.
Provides regular safety training and orientation to keep PMSS and VPRA workers up to date on safety protocols.
Work collaboratively with other team members including sub-contractor trades, engineering professionals, and infrastructure authorities
Conduct audits to check for proper safety gear, signage, and compliance with safety procedures.
Ensure that everyone on site complies with company standards, local and state laws, and industry regulations and investigates incidents, injuries, illnesses, and near misses.
Daily activities will be to attend job briefings and observe work throughout the day and file daily safety reports as required and/or as part of the daily field reports.
On a monthly basis will provide statistical reports to record the efficacy of the safety program and provide any remedial measures as necessary.
Who You Are
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
12 years of overall experience as a safety manager of increasingly complex construction projects involving projects with multiple construction trades
5 years of class 1 rail experience
Proven ability to supervise and manage subordinate safety managers and coordinating work activities of subordinate staff
Direct experience overseeing safety on large infrastructure or heavy civil projects
Proven history of managing multi-site safety programs and subcontractor compliance.
In-depth understanding of: OSHA standards (especially 29 CFR 1926 for construction), State and local safety codes, and ANSI/NFPA/EPA/DOT regulations
Expertise in Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Safety Data Sheets (SDSs), and Incident Investigation & Root Cause Analysis.
Strong leadership in training, mentoring, and supervising field safety officers.
Effective at communicating with contractors, project managers, regulators, and executives.
Ability to foster a culture of safety, not just enforce compliance.
Skilled in developing and delivering safety training programs.
Experience implementing digital safety audit tools, tracking systems, or mobile apps.
Detail-oriented and highly organized
Proactive risk mitigation mindset
Calm under pressure, especially in incident response
Skilled in policy development and strategic planning
First Aid/CPR Certification
Preferred Qualifications:
Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) Certification
OSHA 30-Hour Certification – Minimum; 500 or 510 Trainer certification is ideal.
