Histotechnologist (Histotech)
The Histotechnologist (Histotech) is responsible for preparing tissue samples for microscopic examination by pathologists to aid in diagnosis, treatment, and research. This role ensures high-quality specimen processing through embedding, cutting, staining, and special histological techniques while maintaining compliance with regulatory standards. The Histotech will also oversee laboratory operations, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and adherence to quality control measures. Supervises None Supervisory Responsibilities: Provides training, mentorship, and performance feedback to histology staff. Schedules and assigns daily workload to ensure timely specimen processing. Oversees compliance with laboratory policies, safety regulations, and quality assurance standards. Assists in hiring, onboarding, and evaluating histology personnel. Duties/Responsibilities: Perform embedding, microtomy, staining (routine and special), and slide preparation. Operate and maintain histology laboratory equipment, including microtomes, cryostats, tissue processors, and automated stainers. Ensure accurate labeling, handling, and tracking of specimens. Conduct quality control procedures and maintain documentation in accordance with CLIA, CAP, and other regulatory requirements. Implement and monitor laboratory safety protocols. Train and supervise histology personnel in technical and safety procedures. Collaborate with pathologists and other medical professionals to meet diagnostic needs. Manage inventory of supplies, reagents, and chemicals. Stay current with advances in histotechnology, equipment, and staining techniques. Education/Certifications/Licenses: Associate or Bachelor's degree in Histotechnology, Biology, or related field required. Certification as a Histotechnologist (HTL) or Histotechnician (HT) through ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology) required. State licensure (if applicable) required. Experience: Minimum of 2--3 years of experience in a histology laboratory required. Supervisory or lead experience preferred. Experience with immunohistochemistry and special staining techniques strongly preferred. Required Skills/Abilities: Strong knowledge of histological techniques, instrumentation, and laboratory protocols. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to lead, supervise, and mentor a team effectively. Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot equipment and technical issues. Effective communication skills for interaction with staff, pathologists, and other medical professionals. Proficiency with laboratory information systems (LIS) and basic computer applications. Knowledge of regulatory standards (CLIA, CAP, OSHA) and compliance requirements.
