Deputy I (Treasurer's Office) (Martinsville, VA)
Application Instructions Applications must be picked up and returned to the Treasurer’s Office. (55 West Church Street Martinsville, VA 24112)
This position is a fast-paced, front-line role that requires strong customer service, computer proficiency, and accurate money-handling skills. This position is responsible for processing payments, responding to customer inquiries, maintaining accurate records, and supporting daily office operations. The ideal candidate will be able to multi-task efficiently, communicate clearly, and perform a variety of administrative and financial duties in a high-traffic environment.
Duties Performed
Accepts payments from customer and enters the appropriate data into the automated systems for utilities, taxes and miscellaneous bills.
Responds to inquiries from customer regarding payments, bills, due dates, etc.
Balance the cash drawer daily and prepare deposits for all cash receipts.
Files receipts, bills, invoices and miscellaneous data as required.
Answers, routes and records telephone calls as appropriate.
Operates data entry equipment, calculator, shredder, fax machine, photocopy machine, folding and sealing machine for mailers, variety of printers, etc.
Prepares daily cash receipt report and other reports as requested.
Accepts orders of supplies and equipment for the department.
Prepares and distributes bills as necessary.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
Demonstrated experience in customer service, cash handling, and data entry.
Strong public relations and communication skills.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with a diverse range of individuals both in person and over the phone. Capable of screening and directing calls and visitors appropriately, as well as gathering and conveying information.
Able to understand and follow both verbal and written instructions in order to complete a variety of tasks—both routine and complex—related to office operations, handling customer inquiries, and processing data.
Proficient in basic arithmetic, including the use of calculators or adding machines, to prepare reports, identify inventory needs, and respond accurately to customer questions or data analysis requirements.
Solid knowledge of spelling, grammar, and punctuation to carry out written and oral tasks effectively. Able to write messages, draft reports, and professionally greet and assist office visitors under a variety of working conditions.
Skilled in handling cash transactions, including accurately counting money and providing correct change from a cash drawer.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
May involve long periods of standing, concentration, and repetitive motions such as typing.
Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds (e.g., files, office supplies).
Occasional travel may be required for off-site meetings or training.
