The role is responsible for strategy development and sourcing of North American modes of transportation. The individual is also responsible for identifying cost savings initiatives, project management and implementation, contract negotiations, building relationships with all internal departments to manage business expectations and requirements. The position will report to the Director, Motor Freight Procurement. The estimated spend under management up to $250 MM, supporting businesses with locations from 30 to 120, depending on business unit and transportation mode support. This specific role could cover multiple modes of transportation: Truckload, Intermodal, Less Than Truckload, Parcel, Port Drayage and some Private Tractor/Trailer leases.
Principal Accountabilities
Manage transportation spend with a focus on service, value and results through cost reduction, cost avoidance, process improvement and demand management. Manage carrier relationships and work closely with other mode Managers, Analysts, Logistics Operations & Business units to improve carrier performance. Focus on continual improvement and streamlining of processes. Develop and execute sourcing strategies for area of responsibility. Plan, organize and direct functions and activities related to the procurement, servicing, operation, and continuous improvement for each mode opportunity. Manage carrier performance on a daily and weekly basis to improve on-time pickup/delivery, EDI performance, tender acceptance, equipment quality, safety ratings, etc. Manage and improve carriers under contract by removing poor performers and adding new carriers (niche/regional/national). Monthly reporting and metric requirements and provide further enhancement for improved analysis. Build relationships with plant personnel (general managers and shipping) to better understand how WestRock transportation solutions impact operations and customer service. Manage daily procurement activities that includes interaction and requests from sales, operations, and supply chain. Provide leadership and focus on strategic goals. Professional oral, written communication, and presentation skills. Qualifications and Special Skills Required
Bachelor's Degree with Minimum 5 years Logistics experience Skilled in supplier relations, including carrier development, pricing negotiations, contract negotiations, and performance monitoring. Strong communication and presentation skills Preferred transportation experience in modes of truckload, intermodal, less than truckload (LTL), Drayage (Ports)and parcel (ground & air) Preferred to have knowledge understanding LTL tariffs, classification, as well as parcel services & zone structures. Ability to address issues and problem solve on a strategic and operational level. Strong Analytical and Problem-solving skills Ability to influence stakeholders. Experience as Team Lead, Project Lead, Supervisor or Manager desired Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications (Excel and Access) Approximately 10% travel Candidates are required to undergo a drug screening after receiving a conditional job offer, but before starting employment.
