Northrop Grumman Propulsion Systems and Controls (PS&C)

facility in Elkton, Maryland began solid-propellant rocket operations in 1948. Today, the Elkton PS&C facility designs, develops, and produces solid-propellant propulsion and ordnance systems in programs professionally managed for a wide variety of Government and commercial customers. The facility also serves as the hub for offsite engineering and test facilities in Ronkonkoma, NY and Palm Beach Gardens, FL.

Elkton, Maryland is located on the Upper Chesapeake Bay, midway between Philadelphia and Baltimore. Job Summary Conduct technical leadership activities of one or more solid rocket motor propulsion elements and/or other company products. Generally, works from statement of work from the customer, directs activities for other engineers, and reviews them for adequacy and technical rigor. Analyze requirements for materials, components, and functional systems. Select applicable analytical data from previous products, determine the technical principles involved, mathematically define the problem and compute the engineering characteristics consistent with the specifications, design needs, and requirements of other portions of the product. Oversee and guide work performed by junior engineers. Develop original ideas, elaborate on preliminary design concepts, and execute product development, qualification, and/or delivery. Work checked through consultation and agreement with others rather than by formal review of superior.

Job Responsibilities

Provide technical direction, with supporting input from relevant subject matter experts

Apply theoretical knowledge, engineering techniques, and test data to the solution of complex components, sub-assemblies, and propulsion systems

Works under consultative direction toward predetermined long-range goals and objectives

Determine and pursue courses of action necessary to obtain desired results

Establish requirements for materials, components, and functional systems

Determine engineering tasks required for project planning and execution

Review work of lower-level engineers, provide guidance of activities

Make recommendations for improving own work and/or group’s work

Ensure that the product is adhering to contractual and technical data package requirements

Lead/direct technical communications with internal and external product stakeholders

Lead the engineering effort to accomplish major milestones, such as: gate reviews, technical interchange meetings, major test events, and product delivery

Support earned value performance tracking on the project

Basic Qualifications

Requires Bachelors degree in an engineering discipline with 12 years of relevant experience or Master’s Degree with 10 years of experience or PhD with 8 years of experience

Prior experience with a solid propellant rocket motor development and/or qualification effort

Prior experience guiding and mentoring lower-level engineers

Ability to obtain a Secret Clearance, which requires US Citizenship as a pre-requisite

Ability and willingness to travel 10-25%

Preferred Qualifications

Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering

Prior experience in technical leadership of a solid propellant rocket motor development and/or qualification effort

Current active Security Clearance

Primary Level Salary Range: $163,200.00 - $244,800.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
