Opportunity: Postdoc Scholar in Big Data and River Biogeochemistry | Oregon State University

We are looking to recruit a curious and creative postdoctoral scholar interested in exploring spatial and temporal patterns in multi-solute river chemistry and discharge at +500 sites located across all seven continents ( http://shiny.ceoas.oregonstate.edu/GLASS/ ). The postdoc scholar would be based at Oregon State University in the Sullivan Lab and would collaborate with an interdisciplinary team from the Science Museum of Minnesota, Babson College, and the US Geological Survey. The researcher will have the opportunity to grow their network by participating in a USGS Powell Center Working Group on river silicon stoichiometry. The objectives of this funded project are to: Use existing long-term, global data to enhance understanding of river ecosystems. Develop tools to assess variations in river chemistry across land use, climate, and lithology gradients. Predict water quality in unmonitored and remote river systems that are costly and difficult to monitor. Ideal candidates will have skills in trend analysis, time-series models, machine learning (e.g., Entity-Aware Long Short-Term Memory networks), and other statistical or modeling approaches. Relevant research includes works by Jankowski et al. (2023) and Johnson et al. (2024a, 2024b). To apply, please submit a cover letter and CV via the provided Google form. In your cover letter, describe your experience with big data, collaborative coding workflows in R and GitHub, and outline questions and approaches you are interested in exploring with this dataset. Review of applications begins on August 25, 2025, with a targeted start date of October 1, 2025. Later start date requests will be considered. The initial appointment is for one year, with potential extensions based on performance and funding. The position requires an initial in-person commitment at OSU, though remote work requests will be considered. Applicants must have received their PhDs within the last five years.
