Overview
The Research and Development Manager for Scientific Anglers will be responsible for the development, growth, sourcing, and profitability of all key fly fishing categories and products including fly lines, leaders and tippet, reels, and all other accessories and products sold at SA. This individual will have an excellent background, knowledge and experience of the outdoor market with solid experience in freshwater and saltwater fly fishing. Company Interfaces
This position reports directly to the President of Scientific Anglers in Midland, Michigan. There will be a strong relationship with all marketing, sales and distribution, and plant management team members. The position will include ongoing interaction with the Orvis Research and Development Team, and will take a lead role in the development of fly lines and leaders that will benefit both brands. This position will interact additionally with all Quality Control and Inventory functions to assure product meets the marketing and sales opportunities they deserve. Key Performance Measurements
Gross profit of all products developed for the businesses. Strategic product direction for Scientific Anglers in the form of a rolling 3 year plan. Development of a Best in Class product development process and testing protocol for all development efforts within the business. Cost of goods and sourcing for leaders and tippet, accessories, and rods/reels not manufactured by the production facility. Accountabilities
Ownership of the development of fly lines, leaders and tippet, reels, outfits, and accessories for a planned increase in sales and gross margin Interface with Manufacturing to meet product introduction timelines for all products Ensure quality at all phases in the process and product life Coordinate testing of all products in a way that is consistent with our brand standards Analysis of the business utilizing our in house systems to monitor sales, gross profit, and establish a vision for where the business has the most potential for growth Vendor negotiations for costing and implementation of best sources to assure product delivery and quality on all new product. Timely processing of product information for appropriate forecast / purchase processing, delivery of photography and rep samples, and effective management of merchandising calendar Qualifications
Experience in product development and sourcing in outdoor hardgoods 3-5 years’ experience in fly fishing retail is preferred Excellent judgment, decision making ability, and analytical skills Solid Fly Fishing knowledge in both fresh and saltwater Strong teamwork and organizational skills Must possess excellent communication skills Strong computer skills including Excel and Word Flexible travel required in this position for shows and sourcing BS degree with an engineering background Lean Six Sigma or similar experience preferred About Scientific Anglers
