Overview

The Department of Clinical Sciences at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University invites applications for an associate professor or associate clinical professor of small animal soft tissue surgery. The successful candidate will contribute to pre-clinical and clinical teaching in the DVM program, provide surgery services in the Foster Hospital for Small Animals (FHSA), mentor residents, and engage in research and scholarly activity. This is a continuous-term (tenure-equivalent) track position. Responsibilities

Contribute to pre-clinical didactic, clinical skills, and surgical skills teaching. Assist with specialty board review sessions, journal club, and other aspects of resident training, including supervision of resident research projects. Provide surgical services in the FHSA and participate in the hospital’s 24/7 emergency and critical care operations as part of a multidisciplinary team. Mentor residents and collaborate with other faculty and services to advance patient care and educational goals. Engage in scholarly activity and research, with time allocation negotiable in accordance with the appointment track and interests. Facilities and Resources

The FHSA receives approximately 35,000 cases per year, providing a robust and varied surgical caseload. The emergency service operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and is certified as a Level 1 Trauma Center. The hospital has intraoperative ultrasound and fluoroscopy, CT, MRI, and equipment for arthroscopic, laparoscopic, and thoracoscopic surgery. Current faculty strengths include orthopedics, arthroscopy, traumatology, minimally invasive osteosynthesis, corrective osteotomy and joint replacement, cardiothoracic surgery, and urological procedures. A team of 5 ACVS diplomates, along with neurologists and ophthalmologists, provides surgical services. Research, Teaching, and Career Development

There are opportunities for independent or collaborative research with Tufts faculty and researchers across campuses. Tufts has strengths in clinical and translational research with a clinical trials office. Areas of strength include musculoskeletal disease, cardiovascular disease, comparative oncology, urology, and others. Scholarly activity is valued in the school’s promotions process, and expectations depend on the appointment track and assigned time. All faculty are expected to engage in scholarly activity to remain current. Time devoted to research and scholarly activity is negotiable, consistent with interests and track. Time Allocation and Duties

Between 26–32 weeks will be assigned to clinical activity, with the remaining time distributed to teaching (4–8 weeks), research and scholarly activity (4–12 weeks), and administrative service (2–5 weeks), in accordance with school guidelines and the appointment track. Qualifications

DVM degree or equivalent; completion of an American College of Veterinary Surgery and/or European College of Veterinary Surgery approved residency. Board certification required at the date of hire; eligible for licensure in Massachusetts. Evidence of enthusiasm for and ability in teaching; demonstrated clinical excellence and ability to multi-task and manage a robust caseload. Specific interest in soft tissue surgery; interest in surgical oncology is a plus. Evidence of scholarly activity; effective communication skills and ability to work in a team. Application Process
