Position Summary Under the supervision of the Tennis Coordinator and the Director of Healthy Living, the Tennis Instructor provides instruction in one-on-one, semi-private, and group settings. The role involves developing and leading tennis programs that align with participants’ goals and skill levels, while promoting an engaging and positive environment. The Tennis Instructor is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction, supporting skill development, and ensuring a positive experience for all participants.

Job Responsibilities

Maintaining attendance, progress reports, and lesson schedules (MindBody software)

Submitting accurate payroll records (ADP procedures)

Instruction & Coaching

Conducting structured tennis lessons for participants of all skill levels

Adapting teaching methods to accommodate diverse learning styles and abilities

Emphasizing sportsmanship, teamwork, and positive values

Facility & Equipment Management

Preparing courts and equipment before sessions

Inspecting and maintaining courts for safety and accessibility

Reporting any damage or safety concerns promptly

Participant Engagement & Community Building

Fostering a welcoming and supportive environment

Encouraging engagement from participants and families

Identifying potential volunteers for program support

Effectively communicating program schedules and additional opportunities

Staying informed about YMCA SF resources to provide accurate information

Collaborating with staff and departments to enhance the member experience

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent

2+ years of experience as a Tennis Instructor for youth and adults

Current YMCA-approved CPR and First Aid certification, or the ability to obtain within 30 days or upon the first available class.

Preferred Qualifications

Bilingual in Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, or other languages.

USPTA or USPTR Instructor Certification

Work Environment & Physical Demands The Tennis Instructor primarily works outdoors on tennis courts in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, and wind, with occasional indoor work for meetings, training, or administrative tasks. The role involves frequent interaction with participants in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, with potential exposure to loud noises from court activity and nearby programs.

This position requires sustained physical activity throughout the shift, including standing, running, bending, and demonstrating tennis techniques. The role involves lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling tennis equipment, including baskets of tennis balls and carts, weighing up to 50 pounds. Hand-eye coordination and quick reflexes are essential for demonstrating skills and participating in drills. Effective verbal communication is necessary to provide clear instructions, and the instructor may need to make physical adjustments to help participants improve their technique while maintaining a safe and inclusive learning environment.
