Overview

Gould & Ratner LLP is seeking a Partner to head an Environmental Practice at the firm. The ideal candidate will have at least ten years of experience in Environmental Law, focused on CERCLA and other environmental liabilities in the context of mergers and acquisitions, including insurance procurement and the ability to act as lead environmental counsel. Experience with permitting and compliance under federal and state environmental laws and working with environmental agencies is required. Litigation experience is a plus. The firm represents companies with nationwide and international operations, so the ability to ascertain applicable regulations and provide client counsel accordingly is paramount. Responsibilities

Lead the Environmental Practice and provide strategic counsel on environmental matters in M&A transactions and related areas. Handle all aspects of environmental concern for sophisticated clients across industries. Engage in direct client interaction, business development, and take on significant responsibility on complex matters. Serve as a key business advisor to clients throughout their matters’ life cycles. Collaborate with colleagues, environmental consultants, opposing counsel, and clients to achieve favorable outcomes. Qualifications

10+ years of experience in environmental law, including: Experience assessing environmental risk through due diligence and allocating risk in M&A transactions, including drafting environmental provisions and assessing the need for environmental insurance, permitting transfers, etc. Experience with hazardous waste disposal issues, including RCRA, CERCLA liability, and representing potentially responsible parties in CERCLA cleanups. Experience with all appropriate inquiry in CERCLA liability and the ability to evaluate Phase I/II ESAs and other property assessments. Experience selecting and working with environmental consultants, working with opposing counsel, and maintaining client communication. Familiarity with and strong research capability across environmental law areas (CWA, CAA, RCRA, TSCA, ESA and state analogs). Additional knowledge/experience in broader environmental law areas, including: Emerging contaminants Renewable energy Endangered Species law and permitting Wetlands delineations and governing law Corporate environmental stewardship Strong analytical, interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work in a team and independently, with direct client interaction. Portable book of business required. Licensure: currently licensed in Illinois or Colorado, or licensed in another state with a UBE score qualifying in Illinois or Colorado for comity; eligible to waive in or willing to sit for the IL or CO bar exam (open to relocation candidates who meet these requirements).
